Abstract

Couplings, automatic; convertible to non- automatic.-In an automatic coupling for railway and like vehicles each coupler-head 1 is formed with a forward projecting part 2 adapted to enter a recessed part of the opposed head, and a rotary locking-member 5 is arranged to slide on an inclined seating 8 on the projection 2, the locking-member on one head being pushed or swivelled aside by the projection on the other head as the couplers approach each other so as to ride up the inclines 8, and subsequently falling back again to interlock with the other locking- member as shown in Fig. 7. In the construction shown in Figs. 3, 5 and 8 the main portion of the locking-member 5 is connected by a neck 9 with projections 10 which engage undercut grooves in the recessed or hollow interior part of the projection 2 by which the inclined seatings 8 are formed. The lower part of the locking- member 5 is provided with a lug 6 connected with suitable means whereby a shunter may unlock the coupling from the side of the vehicle, for example, a releasing member 7 may be connected to a counterweighted lever 11, which is so loaded as to assist in the locking action of the coupling. In a modification, Figs. 9 and 11, the locking- member 5 is formed with spaced flanges 16 having lugs 17 engaging grooves 19 formed in external inclines 18 on the coupler-heads 1. In either construction the projection 2 may be provided with an aperture 15 adapted to receive a bolt 14 over which the link 13 of a screw coupling may be placed.
