Abstract

335,901. Strobach, O., and Wickmann, P. A. July 1, 1929. Tea preparations.-An extract of tea is prepared by treating the leaves with an organic solvent (e.g. petroleum ether, pentane, chloroform, ether and the like) and removing the solvent to leave a dark green paste, the chlorophyll, fat and wax-like constituents being thereafter removed from the paste by treatment first with 70-80 per cent alcohol and then with a solvent such as petroleum ether, the tea-aroma residue after distilling off the last-named solvent remaining as a yellowish green or a golden green paste. The tea leaves may be extracted with the suitable organic solvent in a Soxleth extraction apparatus, the solvent being thereafter removed from the extract. As solvents for treating the tea leaves fat, oil and wax may also be used by allowing the leaves to stand for a. long time in contact with these substances. The fat-extract is then shaken with 70-80 per cent alcohol and filtered off, the alcohol being thus removed and the residue treated with. a, solvent such as petroleum ether, as described above. Preferably the tea paste is diluted by the addition of sugars to deposit the tea aroma on the pulverulant additions. It is prefered also to add caffeine and tannic acid extracts, prepared from the tea leaves remaining in the extraction apparatus. Tablets are prepared by dissolving the paste in petroleum ether, adding tannic acid extract and caffeine, and stirring the mixture. The product may be mixed with sweets, chewing gum, milk, and other edible substances.
