Abstract

335,302. Elverson, A. J. H. July 11, 1929. Variable-peed epicyclic gearing. - Epicyclic variable-speed ball or roller friction gearing comprises two or more sets of inner and outer races 6, 6<a> and 5, 5<a>, of which the outer race, for example, is stationary. In the three-speed gear shown, the races 5<a>, 6<a> turn with the driving- shaft 7, while the cage 3, turning with the driven shaft 4, is movable axially to engage either set of balls 1, 2 with its appropriate races. A claw clutch 16 is engaged for direct drive when the epicyclic gearing is in neutral position. In a modificaton, balls &c. of different dameters may be used, the races 5, 6 being of the same diameter, and change of gear may be effected by relative axial movement of the inner and outer races. Two gears such as shown may be used in series, the direct drive on the second gear being however omitted ; a six-speed drive is thus obtained. Springs may be incorporated to ensure resilient contact.
