Abstract
335,280. Verhave, T. H. June 26, 1929. Addition to 315,263. 2, 3-butyleneglycol. - A mash consisting of a carbohydrate, a nitrogen compound, phosphate, and a carbonate, is subjected to microbiological fermentation by means of bacteria, capable of producing 2, 3-butyleneglycol, and after an initial fermentation period the alcohol which is also formed is distilled off. A new portion of the mash is added, reincculated with the bacteria, unless distillation has been carried out at a low temperature, and again subjected to fermentation, after which the alcohol and 2, 3-butyleneglycol formed are recovered. The procedures of distilling the alcohol formed, adding fresh mash and subjecting to fermentation, may be repeated at least once. Alternatively, the alcohol formed may be distilled after the first fermentation period and the residue used as a solvent in the preparation of a new carbohydrate mash. Air may be blown through the fermenting mash in the above processes, and the escaping gases washed for recovery of alcohol.
