Abstract

335,154. d'Arleux, R. M. and Violette, E. April 15, 1929. Addition to 254,023. Tunnel kilns. - In the kiln of the parent Specification additional sand seals for preventing escape of gases to the underside of the trucks are provided, the trucks are provided, and the longitudinal profile of the tunnel and the arrangements for utilizing the air from the cooling zone are also modified. In addition to the sand seals 42 previously provided sand is fed on to the floors of the trucks and is progressively swept off by projecting bricks 52, which are gradually brought closer to the trucks as the latter proceed through the kiln. The sand so swept off falls on to ledges 53, where a further seal is made by the sharp corners 54, and the sand finally passes to the seals 42. The tunnel is formed with an initial horizontal stretch 57, and upward slope 58 to an apex S at the point where the air bye-passed from the cooling-zone through the conduit 39 re-enters the kiln, and a gentle downward slope to a point P beyond the firing-zone L, followed by a steeper slope 60. The firing-zone is divided into two or more sections by one or more depressions B<1> of the roof, and the first section L<1> has a larger number of burners 19 than the remaining sections. At the sides of the bye-pass conduit 39 are arranged further conduits 33, 33<1>, through which a portion of the air from the cooling-zone and a portion of the gases from the firing-zone can be passed to a chimney 30. In these conduits are arranged pipes 34, in which the air and gas, or a combustible mixture for supply to the burners is heated. The burners 19 are arranged to deliver transversely into the tunnel.
