Abstract

334,966. Flind, H. C., and Flind, J. June 18, 1929. Movable-abutment type; cooling parts; working-fluid supply; packing drums; driving pumps. -In a geared vane type of internal combustion engine the rotating elements which divide the working space up into a number of chambers, are formed by two series of pins, each series rotating on a pitch circle of the same diameter, but with the pitch circle axes offset laterally a distance equal to the distance between the centres of each pair of pins. The two series of pins 15 and 17 are each fixed to rotating end plates 11 and 12 respectively which are borne by thrust bearings 28 and 29 on the casing cheeks 22 and 23. Bolts 24 and lugs 25 locate the position of the cheeks. Beteen each pair of pins 15 and 17 is held a partition piece 19. The elements, which always remain parallel, rotate in an anti-clockwise direction and take in fuel mixture from a supply port 35. The charge is compressed and fired by a plug 36, expands, and is exhausted through a port 37. Cooling fluid is circulated through jackets 39 and 38 in the casings, which are supplied by means of a pipe 40. A packing strip of flexible material 43, Fig. 3, is fitted to the inner casing at the point X<1>. The surfaces 44 and 45, Fig. 3, form arcs of circles which are concentric with the pitch circles of the pins 15 and 17 respectively. The pins 15 and 17 may be mounted eccentrically on further pins. Two sparking plugs may be fitted. A modified form of the apparatus for use as a steam engine, or as a steam driven pump, with two inlet and two exhaust ports is described. The Provisional Specification illustrates a spring loaded plunger which may be fitted to the outer wall of the working chamber opposite to the point X'.
