Abstract
334,497. Parfett, F. March 2, 1929. Sheet-separators; pile tables. - In apparatus for delivering newspapers, books, packets of stationery, handkerchiefs, &c., a reciprocating plate enters between the two uppermost articles of a stack of articles to be delivered, and on its return motion removes the article above it., means being provided to lift the stack between each delivery through a distance equal to the thickness of one article. In the apparatus shown, a stack 5 of articles is supported within a casing 1 on a platform 9, carried by a post 10 sliding in a fixed sleeve 11 under the pressure of a spring 13, which brings the top article into contact with an abutment 14. On the actuation of a driving shaft 3 by means of a handle 7, a plate 15, connected to the shaft 3 by arms 18 and links 19, is moved along guides 17 to enter the stack beneath the top article, thus separating it from the lower members of the stack. On the return motion of the plate this article is delivered through a slot 16. The abutment 14, which consists of a block of rubber, is carried by an arm 21 and crank 22 from a shaft 23, which is turned from the shaft 3 by means of a connecting rod 26. The position of the abutment 14 is determined by a projection 28 on the arm 21, which projection during the forward movement travels along the lower edge of a cam 29 pivoted to a bracket 30 but during the return movement travels along the lower edge of the bracket. Motion of the cam 29 is restrained by a spring 33 and that of the arm 21 by a spring 32. The motion of the abutment 14 is such that it first causes a puckering of the top article, if this is flexible, so as to facilitate entry of the plate 15 below it, and that it then rises so as to free the top article for discharge and finally returns to its normal position, where it determines the position of the top member of the stack for the next operation. Upward motion of the post 10 during the motion of the plate 15 is prevented by a device, shown in Fig. 7, which consists of a friction shoe 34 bearing against the post under pressure of a spring 37, when a cam 41 is turned by connections from the shaft 3. The apparatus may be operated electrically instead of manually and provided with coin-release mechanism. It is stated that the stack instead of being supported as described may slide in vertical guides under the pull of a counterweight. The Provisional Specification describes a method of operating from the shaft 3 a brake lever, which controls the upward movement of the stack in the last-mentioned arrangement, and also modified methods of supporting the abutment, which positions the uppermost member of the stack, and of operating it from the shaft 3, and modified connections between the shaft 3 and the tray, which connections operate also a member which causes puckering of the uppermost article.
