  • One object of this invention is to provide sheet feeding mechanism which eliminates the aforesaid defects and disadvantages and automatically feeds and controls a money or other sheet trimming machine so as to materially increwe 0 the output thereof.

Snnentors Patented Dec. 5, 1933 UNITED STATES pany, New York, York This invention relates to sheet feeding mechanism, and while capable of general use, is parnism for trimming the same. In the trimming of sheets of money, for ex-' ample, the sheets, each having a plurality of fed one after another to mechanism for trimming them around their four sides preparatory to numbering and sealing the individual notes and cutting the same from the sheets. Each sheet fed to the trimming mechanism in this manner, is sight registered therewith, and the trimming mechanism has been manually controlled to trim the sheet after registration of the same as stated. The trimming mechanism' being manually controlled, there has been no requirement for the attendant to feed and sight register the sheets at any particular rate of speed,- 0 and the amount of work produced has therefore been governed, on the one hand, by the inclination of the attendant to work quickly or slowly, and limited on the other hand, by manual operations involved in the method above referred to. 5 One object of this inventionis to provide sheet feeding mechanism which eliminates the aforesaid defects and disadvantages and automatically feeds and controls a money or other sheet trimming machine so as to materially increwe 0 the output thereof.
Another object of this invention is to provide sheet feeding mechanism which automatically feeds and automatically controls a money or other sheet trimming mechanism and relieves the attendant from the constant strain and fatigue incident to manual operations heretofore sheet trimming machines.

Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, 5 indicates a machine foundation on which is bolted or otherwise suitably secured, as at 6, 6, a bed plate 7 (Figs. 1 and la). This bed plate, in turn, has bolted or otherwise suitably secured thereto, as at 8, 8, a support 9 for an electric motor 10. The motor 10 is supplied with current from any suitable source through leads 11 enclosed in a suitable flexible conduit 12 and connected with said source and said motorin any suitable manner.
The motor is controlled by a suitable switch (not journaled in suitable hearings in a housing 17' that is bolted or otherwise suitably secured at 17 on a pedestal 18. The pedestal 18 supports the sheet trimming mechanism, to be hereinafter described, and the base 18' of said pedestal is bolted or otherwise suitably secured, as at 19, 19, to the bed plate 7. v
Fixed on the shaft 17 is a worm pinion 20 (Fig. 3) which meshes with a worm gear 21 that is fixed on a short shaft 22. Pinion 20 and gear 21 are enclosed in housing 17-, and shaft 22 extends at right angles to shaft 17 through said housing and is journaled in suitable bearings thereon. Fixed on the shaft 22 is a sprocket 23 around which passes a chain 24 that also passes around a sprocket 25. This sprocket 25 is fixed on a stub shaft 26 journaled in a suitablebearing on an arm 27 (Fig. 1a) which is bolted or otherwise suitably secured at 28 to one of the side frames 29 of the sheet feeding mechanism. The side frames 29 are bolted or otherwise suitably secured, as at 30, 31, to short and long vertical standards 32 and 33, respectively. The standards 32, 33 are anchored in sockets 34 se- 36, 36 to the machine foundation 5.
Fixed on the stub shaft 26 is a sprocket 37 (Figs. 3 and 4) around which passes a chain '38.
This chain 38 also passes around a sprocket 39 that is fixed on a shaft 40. The shaft 40 is journaled in'suitable hearings on side plates 41 car ried by stay shafts 42, 43 that connect theside frames 29 of the sheet feeding-mechanism together. Fixed on the shaft 40 is a pinion 44 that meshes with a gear 45. This gear 45 is fixed on a stub shaft 46 that is journaled in any suitable manner on one of the side plates 41. Keyed to, and slidably along, the stub shaft 46 is a clutch member 47 (Fig. 3) adapted to engage a clutch.member 48 through theaction of spring 49 that is carried on the stub shaft 46 and normally tends to urge the clutch member 47 into engagement with the clutch member 48. The clutch member 48 is secured to or formed integrally with a gear 50 that is loosely mounted on the stub shaft 46 and retained against endwise displacement thereon in any suitable manner.
J ournaled in suitable hearings in the side plates 41 is a rockshaft 51 on which is rigidly secured, as at 52, a bell crank 53. This bell crank 53 is provided with a handle 54 and an arm 55, said arm having an enlarged end 56 to which are rigidly secured clutch spreading pins 57. The shaft 51 may be rocked manually by the handle 54, or said shaft may be rocked automatically by means hereinafter described. In either case, said shaft, when rocked in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 3, causes the arm 55 to bring the pins 57 between the clutch members 47, 48 to disconnect them and prevent driving of the gear 50 through the clutch, the shaft 46, and the described connections therefor with the motor 10. When the shaft 51 is rocked in the opposite direction, however, the spreader pins 57 are removed from the clutch members 47, 48, whereupon the spring 49 engages the clutch member 47 with the clutch member 48 to drive the latter and the gear 50. This clutch controls the operation of sheet feeding mechanism, hereinafter described, and serves to establish a drive therefor with the motor 10, as follows.
The gear 50 meshes with a pinion 58 (Fig. 4) that is secured to or formed integrally with a short shaft 59. This shaft 59 is journaled in suitable bearings on one of the side plates 41, said shaft having secured thereto a gear 60. The gear 11 60 meshes with a pinion 61 that is vfixed on a short shaft 62 journaled in suitable bearings on the side plate 41 that carries the short shaft 59. Fixed on the shaft 62 is a pinion 63 that meshes with a gear 64 secured on a stub shaft 65 which 11 cured thereto a pinion 66 which meshes with a gear 67 that is fixed on a main cam shaft 68 extending transversely of the machine and jour- 1 naled in suitable bearings on the side frames 29 of the sheet feeding mechanism. The sheet feeding mechanism includes a pile elevator which is preferably operated, controlled, and constructed as follows. 1 Mounted loosely on the shaft 68 is a cam 69 (Fig. 4) which is rigidly connected with the gear 67, as by a pin and slot connection 70, 71, that provides for angular adjustment of this cam on said shaft. The cam 69 is adapted to engage 1 a roller 72 journaled on an arm 73 which is fixed on a short shaft 74. This shaft 74 is journaled, in suitable bearings on one of the frames 29, and said shaft and the arm 73 thereon are spring operated in one direction and cam oper- 1- ated in the opposite direction as will hereinafter appear. Fixed on the rockshaft 74 is an arm 75 the free end of which is pivotally connected with one extremity of a link 76. The opposite extremity of the link 76 is pivotally c'oni,
acting therethrough to drive the shaft 78 when the ratchet 80 is turned in one direction by the pawl 79. Turning movement of the ratchet in the opposite direction is prevented by a pawl 83 that engages the teeth of the ratchet and is pivoted on the frame 29 adjacent thereto.
Fixed on the' shaft 78 are worms 84 which mesh with worm gears 85 that are rigidly secured on the front ends of a pair of shafts 86. These shafts 86 extend longitudinally of the machine in spaced parallel relation and are journaled in suitable bearings on the frames 29. The shafts 86 have fixed thereon sprockets 87 around which pass chains 88 that also pass around sprockets 89. The sprockets 89 are fixed on shafts 90 extending longitudinally of the machine below the shafts 86 and joumaled in suitable hearings on the sockets 34. The chains 88 run over suit-,
able guides (not shown) and comprise an. elevator for a pile of sheets 91 elevated by said chains as said sheets are successively separated and forwarded from the top of said stack by sheet separating and forwarding devices to be presently described. The elevator is operated, as aforesaid, by the described driving connections therefor with the spring and cam operated rock arm 73. The pile of sheets 91 is supported on a board 92 which, in turn, is supported by one of several pairs of flights 93 secured in spaced parallel relation on the chains 88.
Any suitable means may be employed to automatically control the upward feeding of the pile of sheets 91 by the elevator 88, but as herein shown said means is preferably of the type dis- I closed in application Serial No. 158,770, C. E. Christophel, filed January 3, 1927. This control means (Fig. 4) includes a detector 94 and a control member 95 automatically controlling the drive for the elevator. The detector 94 is continuously moved toward and away from the pile of sheets 91 and when a sufficient number of sheets have been fed off the top of said pile, the detector lowers sufiiciently to disengage a hook 96 from a projection 97 on the control member 95. The control member is then urged forwardly by a spring pressed rod 98 so that the roller 72 follows the cam 69 which then acts on said roller to operate the drive for the elevator and lift the pile of sheets. When the sheets are lifted to proper height,- the detector 94 is also lifted and acts through its shaft 99 and an arm 100 thereon, to pull a spring 101 and swing a lever 102 upwardly to reengage the hook 96 carried thereby with the projection 97 on the control member 95. The roller 72 is thus prevented from followiixt the cam 69 and the drive for the elevator is therefore no longer operated. The cam 69, however, intermittently engages the roller 72 and acts, together with the spring pressed rod 98, to ra se and lower the detector 94 while the drive for the elevator is thrown out of operation.
When the drive for the elevator is operating,
the hook 96, which at this time is disengaged-1 from the projection 97, is acted upon by a cam 103 on the control member 95. The cam 103 and the spring 101 act to raise and lower the detector 94 during elevation of the pile of sheets, and this continuous operation of the detector during elevation of the pile ensures against interference with the continuous operation of the sheet forwarding device above referred to. The cam 103 is formed on the control member 95 adjacent a bent portion 104 thereof that rides on a pin 105 secured to one of the frames 29 and acting to prevent excessive down d movement of said hearings on the frames 29, and
control member. Excessive upward movement of the lower end of lever 102 is prevented by a pin 106 that projects over said lever from the adjacent frame 29 and is secured thereto in any suitable manner.
The elevator is provided with means for manually operating it to raise and lower the pile of sheets, and as herein shown, said means is preferably of the type disclosed in the application of John H. McElroy, Serial No. 380,078, filed July 23, 1929. This manually operated means includes the shaft 78 which is slidable transversely of the frames 29, a handle 107 fixed on the shaft 78 and having a cam 108 for engagement with the roller 109 extending radially therefrom, a spring 110 carried by the shaft 78 and having one end secured thereto and an opposite end bearing against the adjacent frame 29, the aforesaid devices acting, upon operation of the handle 107, to
slide the shaft 78 and engage and disengage the clutch parts 81, 82 so that the shaft 78 may be operated automatically or' manually, as desired, to operate the elevator.
The sheet separating devices, above referred to, are preferably of the type disclosed in Patent 100 No. 1,475,621, granted November 27, 1923 to C. E. Christophel. These devices include a driven combing wheel 111, a hollow foot clamp 112, and a suction sheet separator 113 (Fig. 1a) The driven combing wheel 111 effects a preliminary 105 separation of topmost sheets of the pile, the foot clamp 112 clamps the remaining sheets and serves to blow air between them and the sheets thereabove, and the separator 113 acts to successively separate the sheets from the top of the no pile. These devices may, if desired, be duplicate'd at opposite rear corners of the pile and said devices are preferably operated and mounted as follows. Fixed on the shaft 62 is a gear 114 (Fig. 4) which meshes with anidler gear 114' 115 journaled on one of the frames 29. The idler gear 114' meshes with a gear 115 that is fixed on a shaft 116. The shaft 116 is journaled in suitable the gear 115 has compounded therewith a bevel meshes with a. similar gear 118. The gear 118 is fixed on a short vertical shaft 119 journaled in suitable bearings in a housing 120 (Fig. 1a) secured to one of the'frames 29. The shaft 119 has fixed thereon a bevel gear 121 which meshes with a similar gear 122 that is fixed on a shaft 123. This shaft 123 is journaled in suitable bearings in the housing 120 and in a housing 124 that is carried by and adjustable along rods 125.
The rods 125, in turn, are carrie'd by frames 126 mounted on the frames 29 at the tops thereof. Keyed to, and slidable along the shaft 123 with the housing 124 is a gear (not shown) which is enclosed in said housing and through other gears therein (not shown) serves to drive a shaft 127. The shaft 127 and the housing,124 are supported on a cross member 128 which in turn supports a bracket 129 on which the sheet separating devices 111, 112, 113 are mounted and adjusted vertically by an adjusting wheel 130. The cross member .140 128 and the parts carried thereby are adjustable along the rods 125 which, for this purpose have rack teeth 131 engaged by a pinion 132 fixed on the axis of a hand wheel 133 which is journaled on the cross member 128 and serves to move the latter and the sheet separating devices along the rods 125 as aforesaid. The shaft 127 serves, 1 through gearing (not shown), to drive the comb- 'ing wheel 111 and a cam shaft 134 having'a series of-cams thereon (not shown) which raise and 0 gear 117 which 120 lower the sheet separating devices as disclosed in Christophel Patent No. 1,475,621 above referred Any suitable means may be employed to create suction in a conduit 135 and blow air through a conduit 136 (Fig. 1a). These conduits are connected with control mechanism which is preferably of the type disclosed in application Serial No. 260,123, filed March 8, 1928 by E. R. Kast. This control mechanism is enclosed in a housing 137 mounted on one of the frames 29 and having air and suction connections 138, 139 with the hollow foot clamp 112 and the suction sheet separator 113, respectively- The mechanism in the housing 137 controls the air in clamp 112 and the suction in separator 113 so that these devices act to blow air between and separate the sheets at the proper time for forwarding by suction sheet forwarding devices 140 (Figs. 1a and 4). The mechanism in housing 137 also controls the production of suction in the devices 140 and for this purpose said housing is connected with said devices by a flexible conduit 141. The suction forwarding devices preferably have the same construction and operation as disclosed in Patent No. 1,584,734, granted May 18, 1926, to C. E. Christophel.
Accordingly, there is fixed on the shaft 68 a cam 142 in the cam groove 143 of which is engaged a roller 144. This roller is journaled on an arm 145 that is loosely mounted on a stud 146 secured to a stationary part of the machine. The arm 145 has secured thereto or formed integrally therewith, a segmental arcuate-shaped rack 147 that meshes with a pinion 148 fixed on a tube 149. The tube 149 is loosely mounted on a stay shaft 150 which extends transversely of the feeder and is secured to the side frames 29 thereof. Fixed on the tube 149 so as to be oscillated therewith by the rack 147 and the pinion Y is reciprocated along a substantially horizontal track 155. The track 155 is fixed on the stay shaft 150 substantially at the center of the pile elevator and in overhanging relation with the forward top portion of the pile of sheets carried thereby. The other arm 156 of the bell crank lever is provided with a cam 157 that engages a roller 158 journaled on a lever 159. The lever 159 is pivoted at 160 on the carriage 154, and during reciprocation of said carriage, the lever 159 is raised and lowered to impart like motion to the suction sheet forwarding devices 140. For this purpose, the lever 159 is provided With'a forked end 161 which engages the underside of a collar 162' that is'fixed on a pipe 163 mounted for vertical sliding movement on the carriage 154. The upper end of this pipe 163 is connected with the flexible suction conduit 141, andthe lower end of'said pipe has branches 164 which carry the forwarding devices 140.
The sheet separating and forwarding devices operate, successively to separate andv forward sheets from the top of the pile on the elevator, and as each sheet is forwarded, it is received between a feed roller 165 and droprollers 166 (Figs. 3, 4 and 5) .which feed the sheets across a movable support 167 to other feeding devices and a- The movable sheet support 167 is pivotally mounted on studs 167 (Fig. 3), as by brackets 173 (Fig. 3) loosely receiving said studs and riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the support 167 adjacent the rear edge thereof. The studs 167 project inwardly from plates 41, and the sheets pass from the feed'roller 165 to the support 167 over bridge pieces 167 (Fig. 1a) which are secured on the stay shaft 42. The support 167 is raised into alignment with a stationary trimming table or die plate 174 (Fig. 1) when the sheet is fed thereon as hereinafter described, and said movable support 167, is lowered when a trimmer 175 and cutters 175' thereon descend and trim the sheet and cut the trimming at diagonally opposite corners thereof, on said table or die plate. This lowering of the support 167 as the waste portions of the trimmed'sheet to fall out of the path of travel of untrimmed sheets to the trimming mechanism and thus insure against jamming or obstruction of the sheets fed thereto.
The trimming mechanism, the sheet feeding mechanism and the movable support 167 are operated in timed relation, and these devices are, for this purpose, preferably interconnected to insure synchronous operation of the same. The support 167 is preferably operated by a cam 176 (Fig. 3) that is fixed on the cam shaft 68. The cam 176 engages a roller 177 that is journaled on the short bent arm 178 of a bell crank 179 that has a long forwardly projecting arm 180. The bell crank 179 is loosely mounted on the stay shaft 42 and retained against endwise displacement thereon by any suitable means for this purpose, and the free end of arm 180 carries a stud or pin 180' with which is connected one end of a spring 262 (Fig. 7). The opposite end of spring 262 is connected with a hook 263 on a pedestal 231 of the trimming machine and said spring serves to maintain the roller 177 in engagement with cam 176 so that arm 180 is cam operated in one direction and spring operated in the opposite direction by the 'sheet feeding mechanism. The arm 180 has pivotally connected therewith one end of a link 181 the opposite end of which is pivotally connected with an arm 182 that is fixed on a rockshaft 183. The rockshaft 183 is journaled in suitable bearings on arms 184 that are fixed on the stay shaft 42 in any suitable manner.. Fixed on the rockshaft .183 is an arm, made in two parts, 185, 186 adjustably connected together as by. a pin and slot connection 187, 188. The arm' 185, 186' is pivotally connected with a bracket 189 that is'bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the support 167 on the under forward portion thereof. The bracket 189 has pivotally connected therewith one extremity of a spring-pressed rod 190'the' opposite extremity of whichis guided in a=bracket 191 bolted or otherwisesuitably-secured tov a stationary part of the sheetv trimming mechanism.- It will appear from"th"-foregoing, that the table or support 167 is rocked in one direction by ,arm 180 to enable the sheets to pass over the table to the trimming mechanism and that said table is rocked in the opposite direction by said arm to facilitate clearing of waste portions of the trimmed sheets from the path of travel of untrimmed sheets to said mechanism.
The pedestal 18 has bolted or otherwise suitably secured thereto a column 192 (Fig. 1) on the top of which is bolted the stationary table or trimmer die plate 174. As each sheet is fed across the bridge pieces 167' 'and the movable support 167 by the feed and drop rollers 165, 166, said sheet is engaged between feed and drop rollers 193, 194 that feed the sheet across the table 174 into engagement with movable front stops 195 (Figs. 1, 3,7, 10 and 11) that stop the.
sheet and enable it to be registered by hand with the trimmer 175. The feed rollers 193 project slightly above the top of the support or die plate 174 through openings 196 therein (Figs. 2 and 6). The feed rollers 193 are fixed on a shaft 197 "(Figs 3 and 10) journaled in suitable bearings at the rear of the support 174 andon the underside thereof. Fixed on the shaft 197 and extending in a suitable opening inthe underside of the support 174, is a pulley 198 (Fig. 3) around which passes a belt 199 that serves to drive the shaft 197 and the feed rollers 193 thereon. The belt 199 passes around an idler pulley 200 and around a driven pulley 201. The driven pulley 201 is loosely mounted on a stub shaft 202 carried by a bracket 203 which carries the bracket 191. The
bracket 203 depends from and is secured to the table or die plate 174 and carries the idler pulley 200. Secured to or formed integrally with the pulley 201 is a sprocket 204 around which passes a chain 205. The chain 205 also passes around a sprocket 206 which is fixed on the shaft 40 to rotate therewith. It will appear, from the foregoing, that the feed rollers 193 are driven from the shaft 40 of the sheet feeding mechanism through the described connections for said shaft with the shaft 197 that carries sai'd rollers.
Rollers 194 are journaled on long bent arms 207 which. are fixed on a rockshaft 208 (Figs. 2a, 3 and 6). Each of the arms 207 is preferably made in two parts pivotally and adjustably connected together at 209 and 210, respectively. The rockshaft 208 is journaled in suitable hearings on the frames 29 and extends transversely thereof. Fixed on the rockshaft 208 is an arm 211' (Fig. 6) on the free end of which is journaled a roller 212. This roller 212 extends under and is engaged by cam 213 that is fixed on the cam shaft 68. It will appear, from the foregoing, that the drop rollers 194 are raised and lowered by the cam 213 and act, in conjunction with. the feed rollers 193 to feed the sheets successively over the table or trimmer die plate174 to the sheet stops 195 at the front thereof.
The sheet stops 195 are moved upwardly to stop each sheet on the table 174 and after the sheet has been registered and trimmed, said stops move downwardly and the sheet is delivered by mechanism to be hereinafter described. The stops 195 are preferably mounted and operated as follows- J ournaled in suitable hearings on the under forward portion of the table 174 is a rockshaft 214 (Fig. 11). This rockshaft has .fixed thereon sleeves 215 within which are slidably mounted rods 216 that carry the stops 195, The rods 216 are prevented from rotating in the sleeves 215 by screws 216 engaged in key-ways 216" of said rods. The rods 216 and the stops 105 may thus be adjusted longitudinally of the sleeves 215, as by adjusting screws 217 housed in extensions 218 of said sleeves and having threaded engagement with theshafts 216. When the rods 216 have been adjusted, they are locked by nuts 217 threaded thereon to bear the sleeves 215. Fixed on the rockshaft 214 is an arm 219 pivotally connected with one end of a link 220. The opposite end of the link 220 is pivotally connected with an arm 221 that is fixed on a rockshaft 222. This rockshaft 222 is journaled in suitable bearings on the frames 29 and extends transversely thereof.
Fixed on the rockshaft 222 is an arm 223. The arm 223 has journaled thereon a roller 224 that engages a cam 225 that is fixed on the cam shaft 68. The arm 223 has pivotally connected therewith one end of a spring pressed rod 226. The opposite end of the rod 226 is slidably guided at 226' on one of the side plates '41. It will appear, from the foregoing, that the rock shaft 222 is cam-operated in one direction and spring-operated in the. opposite direction, and that when said shaft is rocked it acts, through the described connections therefor with the stops 195 to raise and lower the same as aforesaid.
The sheet trimming mechanism may be of any suitable construction but as herein shown said mechanism is preferably operated and constructed as follows. Fixed'on the shaft 22 is a pulley 227 (Fig. 1) around which passes a belt 228. The belt 228 also passes arounda pulley 228' that is loosely mounted on a shaft 229. This shaft 229 is journaled in suitable hearings on a head 230 (Fig. 7) that overhangs the support 174 and is secured to or formed integrally with the column 229 and carries a collar 235 having an annulargroove 236 into which projects a small roller 237. This roller 237 is journaled on the upper end.of an arm 238 which is, pivoted at 239 on the head 230. The arm 239 has secured to orformed integrally therewith a second arm 240 which .ex-
tends -substantially at right angles to the arm 238 and is pivotally connected with the upper end of a rod 241. The rod 241 extends downward y through suitable openings formed in spaced brackets 242 and 243 (Fig. 9) secured to or formed integrally with the column 231 and the pedestal 18, respectively. Mounted on the rod 241 between the brackets 242 and 243 is a spring 244the lower end of which bears against the bracket 243. The upper end of the spring 244 bears against a collar 245 fixed on the rod 241 in spaced relation with the bracket 242. The spring 244 normally tends to movp the rod 241 upwardly to hold the clutch parts 232, 233 in disengaged relation.
Fixed on the rod 241 below the bracket 243 is a keeper 246 that is engaged by a latch 247. This latch 247 is secured to or formed integrally with a lever 248 having connected therewith one end' head 230.
which carries said latch, is pivoted at 251 on a block 252 which is secured to or formed integrally with a long lever 253. The block 252 is provided with a shoulder 254 that limits movement of the lever 248 imparted thereto by the spring 249 to hold the latch 247 in engagement with the keeper 246. The lever 253 is pivoted at 255 on the bracket 250, and pivotally connected with said lever, as at 256, is a yoke 257 the arms of which have trunnioned therein the lower end of a rod 258. Mounted on the rod258 is a spring 259 the lower end of which bears against an abutment 260. The upper end of the spring 259 bears against a collar 261 that is fixed on the 'rod 258. The upper end of the rod 258 is pivotally connected with the forward free end of the lever 180. Said end of the lever 180 also has connected therewith the lower extremity of the spring 262 (Fig. 7). The upper extremity of the spring 262 is secured to the hook 263 which projects outwardly from and is secured to the column 231, as previously described.
The lever 180 is provided intermediate its opposite ends with an enlarged portion 264 in which is formed an arcuate-shaped slot 265 through which passes the feeder controllingv rockshaft 51. This slot 265 provides for rocking movement of the arm 180 imparted thereto by the cam 176 and the, spring 262. The rocking arm 180 acts, through the described connection therefor with the rod 241, to move the latter up and down and swing the arm 238 aboutits pivot 239. When the arm 238 is swung to the left (Fig. 7) a detent 266 pivoted at 267 on said arm passes over a shoulder 26.8 on a bent lever-269 and swings the latter downwardly. This lever 269 is pivoted at 270 on the bearing for "shaft 229, and downward swinging movement of said lever is limited by a pin 271 secured to the arm 238. When the lever 269 is swung downwardly the notched end 272 thereof is disengaged from a shoulder 273 on the clutch part 233 and the latter is engaged with the clutch part 232 by the arm 238. The lever 269 is guided in a slot 274 formed in the upper end of the column 231, and
when the clutch parts 232, 233 are connected, the shaft 229 is operated and the trimmer 175 descends and trims the money or other sheet that hasv been delivered onto the support or trimmer die plate 174 by the described means for this purpose.
The trimmer 175' is of rectangular formation adapted to trim the sheet on all four sides thereof, and said trimmer is mounted and operated as follows. Secured to or formed integrally with the shaft 229 at the end thereof opposite that carrying the pulley'228', is an eccentric pin 2'75 on which is mounted a block 276. This block 276 is slidably received in a horizontally extending elongated guide "opening 277 of a head 278 that is secured to or formed integrally with a .vertically movable slide 279. The slide 279 is guided vertically in theslot- 280 of a guide 281, secured to or formed integrally with the overhanging '280 of guide 281 by a plate, 282 secured to said guide, as by machine screws 283. Secured to or formed integrally with the slide 279, at the end thereof below the guide 281, is a bail 284. This bail has secured .to or formed integrally therewith a horizontally arranged rectangular frame 285 on the four sides of which are secured thev blades 2860f the trimmer 175. The bail 284 has formed in the upper part thereof a vertical guide 287 for a slide 288 which is retained in said guide .marks on the sheet with the pointers 295, 297,
The slide 279 is retained in the slot' by a plate 289 secured to the bail 284, as by machine screws 290.
Secured to, or formed integrally with, the slide 288 is a second bail 291. This bail 291 has secured to the arms thereof a horizontally arranged rectangular guard 292. When the clutch parts 232, 233 are connected, as above described, the shaft 229 is rotated a single revolution, and the connections for said shaft with. the bail 284 cause the trimmer 175 to descend and trim the sheet on the trimmer die plate 174 and then move upward therefrom. When the trimmer 175 descends, the guard 292 rests on the trimmer die plate 174 and prevents the operator from coming in contact with the trimming knives 286. The table or trimmer die plate 174 has pivoted thereon a circular plate 293 in the center of which is a cross mark 294. This cross mark 294 registers with a pointer 295 which is fixed on a shaft 296 journaled in suitable bearings on the frame 285 and extending transversely thereof. Fixed on the shaft 296 in spaced relation with the pointer 295 are other pointers 297. The ends, of allthe pointers above referred to are arranged in a straight line, and previous to descent of the trimmer 175, the sheet is delivered onto'said support under said pointers and there stopped by the sheet stops 195. In the case of sheets of money, each of the same has a plurality of notes printed thereon and sight marks at the center 105 of the sheet.
When the sheet is stopped onthe trimmer die plate, the trimmer is in its uppermost position, and the machine attendant sight registers the The machine'attendant is required to perform this operation in the shortest possible time for the reason that the described connections between the feeder andthe trimmer are timed. so that the latter descends almos immediately after the sheet has been delivered onto the trimmer die plate. The sheet having been sight registered, the trimmer 175 descends and trims the sheet on all four sides thereof. When the trimmer 175 descends, cutters 175' (Figs. 1, 2 and 7) on diagonally opposite corners thereof, cut the trimming at its corresponding diagonally opposite corners. The cutters 175' cooperate with cutters I 175" which are carried by the trimmer die plate -174 and provide therewith spaces 175" to receive another sheet is delivered onto the trimmer die plate to be stopped, sight registered, and trimmed thereon, as in the case of r the first sheet.
These operations are repeated in a substantially continuous manner as the sheets are delivered successively onto the trimmer die plate by the described means for this purpose.
During one revolution of the shaft 229 the trimmer 175 is moved downwardly and then upwardly, whereupon the low part of the cam 176 moves opposite the roller 177 and the spring 262 acts to raise the arm 180 which, in turn, raises the support 167. As the arm 180 is raised, the connections therefor with the arm 240 swings the arm 238 to the right (Fig. 7) whereupon the clutch parts 232, 233 are disengagedby said arm and the pin 271 engages and raises the lever 269 which acts, through engagement of the notched end 272 thereof with the abutment 273, to stop rotation of the clutch part 233 andthe shaft 229 after the same have made one revolution. It will appear, from the foregoing, that the operation of the trimmer is controlled automatically by the sheet feeding mechanism, and that the machine attendant is required to sight register the sheets as fast as they are delivered onto the table or trimmer die plate, in order that they may be trimmed thereon and delivered from said die plate by mechanism which will. now be described. It will'further appear, that by chang-- ing the size of the sprocket 25 from time to time,
without the knowledge of the attendant, the sheet V feeding and trimming mechanisms may be speeded up so that the machine attendant is required to perform his or her duties at correspondingly increased speed Secured to or formed integrally with the loose pulley 228' is a pulley 298 around which there passes a belt 299. This belt 299 passes downwardly around a pulley 300, then upwardly around pulleys 301 and 302 (Figs. 1, 2 and 7). From the pulley 302 the belt 299 passes downwardly around a pulley 303, then upwardly around a pulley 304, and then downwardly around a pulley 305 (Fig. 1). From the pulley 305, the belt passes upwardly over a pulley 306 and around the pulley 298 to the previously mentioned pulleys. The pulleys 300 and 302 are preferably formed integrally with each other, and are journaled, with the pulley 306, on an arm 307 that projects from the column 231 and is secured thereto in any suitable manner. The pulley 301 is fixed on a shaft 308 that is journaled in suitable bearings in brackets 309 that are bolted or otherwise suitably securedon the side of an inclined delivery box 310 (Figs. 1 and 2). The box 310 is secured at 311 on the upper end of a pedestal 312 that is bolted or otherwise suitably secured at 313 to the 'base plate 7. The pulley 364 is secured on a shaft 314 that is journaled in suitable bearings on the table or trimmer die plate 174 at the under forward portion thereof. The pulleys 303 and 305 are preferably formed integrally with each other in spaced relation, and said pulleys are journaled on a stub shaft 315 carried by the pedestal 18.
It will appear, from the foregoing, that the belt 299 continuously drives the shafts 308 and 314.'
These shafts have fixed thereon feed rollers 316 and 317, respectively, the rollers 317 and the pulley 304 projecting upwardly through openings 318 formed in the support or trimmer die plate 174 at the forward end thereof (Figs. 1, 2, 7 and 10). The brackets 309 have journaled therein above the rollers 316 a shaft 319 on which are fixed rollers 320 that cooperate with the rollers 316. The rollers 317 and drop rollers 321 cooperating therewith serve to feed the trimmed sheets successively between the rollers 316, 320, under a guard 322 and into the delivery box 310. The guard 322 is pivoted on the shaft 319, and the forward end of said guard rests on the lower forward end of said delivery box.
The drop rollers 321 are operated in timed relation with the trimmer to feed each sheet therefrom into the delivery box when the trimmer is raised. Said drop rollers are preferably operated and mounted as follows.

The arm 328 is pivoted on the bail 284 and connected therewith by a spring 329. The arm 328 extends through a guide 330 that is secured to the ward end thereofa downwardly projecting fork 331 that extends over the feed rollers 317 and carries the drop rollers 321 which cooperate therewith.
When the lever 253 is moved downwardly to connect the clutch 232, 233, and cause the trimmer 75 to descend, the arm 324 is also moved downwardly by the rod 323 and the leaf springs 326 move downwardly toward, but in spaced relation with, the lower end of the slot 327 formed in clevis 327'. The guard 292 descends and rests on the sheet and support 174, but the trimmer 175 continues to descend to trim said sheet on all four sides thereof and the cutters 175' sever the unbroken trimmed margin at diagonally opposite corners of the same. This relative movement between the guard 292 and the trimmer 175, enables the spring 329 to lift the am 328 in the guide 330 so that the drop rollers 321 are raised out of engagement with the sheet and the feed roller 317. When the trimmer is raised, however, the guard 292 drops slightly and causes the arm 328 to swing downwardly so that the drop rollers 32l are engaged with the trimmed sheet and the feed rollers 317 thereupon act to feed said sheet be.-

When the drop rollers lower, the arm 320 engages the springs 326 which, upon being lifted by the lever 253 and the rod 323 raise the guard- 292 with the bail 284 and the trimmer 175 carried thereby. It will appear from the foregoing, that .each time the trimmer is lowered the drop rollers next sheet.
Under normal conditions, the feeding, trimming, and delivery of the sheets are accomplished automatically and in a substantially continuous manner, and the trimming mechanism and other described mechanisms are controlled by the sheet feeding mechanism. It sometimes happens, however, that the attendants services are required elsewhere, or that an emergency arises that requires stopping of the sheet feeding and trimming mechanism. Accordingly, said mechanisms are preferably provided with control devices and said devices are preferably mounted and operated as follows. Bolted or otherwise suitably secured, as at 332, to the base 18 of the pedestal 18 is a bracket 333 on the upper end of which is'pivoted a lever 334 having an axis of rotation extending substantially at right angles to that of the lever 253 (Fig. 9) This lever 334 has secured thereto a short foot pedal 335 extending in parallel relation with a long foot pedal 336 that is secured to the lever 253. These pedals 335, 336 are provided with foot plates 337 and 338, respectively, and the lever 334 is connected with the lower end of a spring 339 whose upper side plate 41.

The spring 339 normally tends to swing the lever 334 and the the pedal 335 thus bringing the stop 340 under the lever 253 and stopping the operation of the trimming mechanism. The untrimmed sheet on the table or trimmer die plate 174 then prevents a detector finger 341 (Figs. 3 and 7) from moving downwardly into an opening 342 in the trimmer die plate 174. The detector 341 then acts, through mechanism which will now be described, to stop the sheet feeder and prevent it fromfeeding any more sheets to the trimming mechanism until the operator has released the foot pedal 335, and depressed the pedal 336 downwardly to connect the trimmer clutch and trim the sheet on the trimmer die plate.
The detector finger 341 is secured to or formed integrally with an arm ,343 (Fig. 3) which is fixed on a rockshaft 344 journaled in suitable bearings on arms 345 and the side plates 41. The arms 345 carry supports 346 for resilient stops 346' which limit the upward swinging movement of the support 167, and said arms are fixed on a stay shaft 347' extending transversely of the frames 29- and secured thereto in any suitable manner. The stay shaft 347 also has fixed thereon supports 348 for top rods 349 which extend over the bridge pieces 167" and the support 167 and prevent upward displacement of the sheets as they are fed across said bridge pieces and said support to the sheet trimming mechanism.
The sheets pass under the detector 341 to lift it and rock the shaft 344 in one direction, and the detector 341 drops into the opening 342 after delivery of each sheet from the plate 174 and rocks the shaft344 inthe opposite direction.
With the sheet trimming mechanism stopped and a sheet in position on the trimmer die plate 174, however, the detector 341 is prevented from dropping into the opening 342, and an arm fixed on the shaft 344, and normally rocking therewith, fails to move into the'path of travel of a detent 351 secured to or formed integrally with a rocking arm 352. The arm 352 is loosely mounted on a shaft 353 extending transversely of the frames 29 and journaled in suitable bearings thereon. The shaft 353 has fixed on one end thereof a handle 354 for rocking the shaft to control the valve mechanism in the housing 137.
Under normal operating conditions, the arm 352 is rocked by 'the high part only of a cam 355 that is fixed on the cam shaft 68. The arm 352 is rocked in the opposite direction by a spring 356 having one extremity secured to said'arm and its opposite extremity secured to one of the plates 41. Pivotally connected with the arm 352 is a rod 357 thelower slotted end 358 of which is engaged over a pin 359 carried by an arm 360. The arm 360 is fixed-on the feeder control'shaft 51 and said arm has connected therewith one extremity of a spring pressed rod 361 the opposite extremity of which is guided on the adjacent The rod 361 normally tends to swing the arm 360 upwardly and maintain the clutch spreader 56, ,57 out of engagement with the clutch parts 47, 48 so that said parts are connected by the spring 49 todrive the pile elevator and the sheet engaging devices associated therewith through the means previously described'for this purpose.
When a sheet is stopped on the die plate 174, the arm 350 fails to move into the. path of travel of the detent 351, and the spring 356 pulls the ,arm 352 downwardly so that the cam engaging roller 362 thereon follows the low part of the cam 355 and the rod 357 is pushed downwardly to rock the arm 360 in the same direction. This downward motion of the arm 360 swings the shaft 51 so that the clutch spreader 56, 57 engages and spreads the clutch parts 47, 48, and thus stops the drive for the pile feeder and associated devices.
Fixed on the clutch throw-out shaft 51 is an arm 363 (Figs. 3 and 9) that is pivotally connected with the upper end of a link 364. The lower end of the link 364 is pivotally connected with an ar m 365 that is fixed on a stub shaft 366 journaled in a bracket 367. The bracket 367 is bolted or otherwise suitably secured at 368 to the bed plate 7, and fixed'on the stub shaft 366 is a second arm 369 provided at its free end with a detent 370 that is normally engaged with a spring pressed latch 371. The latch 371 is pivotally mounted at 372 on the long lever 336, and the spring for said latch is indicated at 373.
When thedetector 341 and the arm 352 stop the feeder, as above described, the arm 363 is moved upwardly and acts, through the described connections therefor with the shaft 366, to rock the arm 369 downwardly and disengage the detent 370 from the latch 371.- Assuming now, that the attendant proceeds with the operation of sight registering a sheet and completes said operation, the short foot pedal 335 is released and the spring 339 rocks said lever so that the stop 340 is disengaged from and moved out of the normal pathof movement of the lever 253. The attendant then presses the long foot pedal 336 downwardly to connect the clutch parts 232, 233 so that shaft 229 is operated and the trimmer trims the sheet that has been stopped on the trimmer die plate 174.
'The attendant then further presses the lever 336 downwardly so that the latch 247 rides downwardly over the keeper 246 and the latch 371 is reengaged with the detent 370. The attendant thereupon releases the lever 336 and the latter moves upwardly and the sheet trimming mechanism is thereafter operated automatically, as before described. At the same time, the lever 336 on moving to normal operating position, moves the arm 369 upwardly and said arm, through the described connections therefor with the arm 363, operates the shaft 51 to remove the clutch spreader from the clutch parts 47, 48. Said parts are then engaged by the spring 49 to start the feeder which then feeds the sheets successively to the sheet trimming mechanism. The latter trims the sheets successively as they are sight registered in like manner, and said sheets are delivered one after another from the trimming mechanism into the delivery box 310, as before described.
manual controls, and with the resulting increased f production and efliciency of the trimming plant and personnel therefor. Moreover, in the case of trimming sheets of money, the attendant is relieved from the various duties in connection with operation of manual controls, and is only required to sight register the sheets with the trimmer as fast as they are delivered thereto from the sheet feeder. In this way, the attendant is required to keep the speed of sight registering up to the speed of delivery and trimming, and thus insure maximum production of the trimming plant under ordinary operating conditions thereof. Further, in the case of experienced orinexperienced attendants, the sheet feeding and trimming mechanisms may be gradually speeded up without their knowledge until both the mechanisms and the attendants therefor are brought up to maximum efliciency.
While, one embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described with more or less particularity, it is to be expressly understood that the invention is not limited to said embodiment nor otherwise than by the terms of the appended claims.
What we claim is: I
1. In apparatus of the character described, means for supporting and feeding a supply of sheets, means for separating and forwarding sheets successively from said supply, mechanism for operating the aforesaid means, sheet trimming means to which the sheets are delivered successively from the separating and forwarding means, mechanism for operating the sheet trimming means and including a driven element and a clutch adapted to connect and disconnect said element relative to said sheet trimming means, and clutch operating connections between said firstnamed mechanism and the clutch and timing the operation of said clutch and the sheet-trimming means so that the latter trims each sheet delivered thereto from said sheet separating and forwarding means.
2. In apparatus of the character described, means for supporting and feeding a pile of sheets upwardly step by step, means forseparating and forwarding sheets successively from the top of said pile, mechanism'for operating the aforesaid means, recriprocating sheet trimming means to which the sheets are delivered successively from the sheet separating and forwarding means, mechanism for operating the sheet' trimming means and including a driven element and a clutch adapted to connect and disconnect said element relative to said sheet trimming means,-
and clutch operating devices connecting said clutch and said firstnamed mechanisms together and timing the operation of the clutch and said reciprocating sheet trimming means so that the latter trims each sheetdelivered thereto'from said sheet separating and forwarding means. 3. In apparatus of the character described,
means for supporting and feeding a supply of' sheets, means for separating andiorwarding sheets successively from said supply, mechanism for operating the aforesaid means, intermittently operated sheet trimming means to which the sheets are delivered successively from the sheet separating and forwarding means, mechanism for intermittently, operating the' sheet trimming .means and including a driven element and a clutch-adapted to connect and disconnect-said element relative to said sheet trimming means, and clutch operating means interconnecting the i clutch and said first-named mechanisms and actuated thereby to .intermit'the operation of said clutch and said sheet trimming means so that the latter trims each sheet delivered thereto from said sheet separating and forwarding means;
4. In apparatus'of the character described, in-
termittently operated means for supporting and feeding a supply of sheets, continuously operated means for separating and forwarding sheets successively from said supply, mechanism for operating the aforesaid means, reciprocating sheet trimming means to which the sheets are delivered successively from the sheet separating and 'forwarding means, devices for intermittently reciprocating the sheet trimming means and including a crank shaft connected therewith, a driven element loosely mounted on the crank shaft, and a clutch adapted to connect and disconnect said element relative to said crank shaft, and clutch operating means operated by said mechanism and timing the operation of said clutch so that the sheet trimming means is actuated to trim each sheet delivered thereto from said sheet separating and forwarding means.
5. In apparatus of the character described,
means for supporting and feeding a supply of sheets, means for separating and forwarding sheets successively from said supply, mechanism for operating the aforesaid means, sheet trim-- ming means to which the sheets are delivered successively from the sheet separating and for-- warding means, mechanism for intermittently operating the'sheet trimming means and including a driven element and a clutch adapted to connect said element with and disconnect the same from said sheet trimming means, and devices operated by said first named mechanism and adapted to actuate said clutch so that the trimming means operates to trim each sheet delivered thereto from said sheet separating and forwarding means.

In apparatus d the character described, sheet feeding means, means for trimming sheets successively delivered thereto from the sheet feeding means, mechanism for intermittently operating the sheet trimming means, a clutch for connecting said mechanism with and for disconnecting the same from the sheet trimming means, and devices operated by the sheet feeding means and actuating said clutch so that the sheet trimed to trim each sheet delivered'thereto on all four sides thereof, clutch controlled mechanism for operating the trimmer, and automatically actuated clutch operating devices for the clutch of said mechanism and timing the operation thereof so that said trimmer trims each sheet "delivered onto said table or die plate from said sheet feeding means.

mechanism for operating the sheet-trimming means and including a driven element and a clutch adapted to connect and disconnect said element relative to said sheet trimming means, a
lever operated by said cam, and devices'operated v by said lever and actuating the clutch of said last named mechanism at predetermined intervals; j 9. In' apparatus of the character described,
operation of said last named mechanism, devices for operating said clutch, a lever for operating said devices, and a cam on said shaft and adapted to operate said lever.

In apparatus of the character described, sheet feeding means, a table or die plate onto which sheets are successively delivered "from the sheet feeding means, a trimmer movable toward and away from the table or die plate and adapt- ,ed to trim each sheet delivered thereto on all four sides thereof, mechanism for operating said trimmer,- a clutch controlling the operation of said mechanism, clutch operating means, and means operated by the sheet feeding means and connected with said clutch operating means to automatically actuate the same.

In apparatus of the character described, sheet feeding means, mechanism for operating the sheet feeding means and including a driven shaft having a cam thereon, a table or die plate onto which sheets are delivered successively from the sheet feeding means, a trimmer movable toward and away from the table or die plate and adapted to trim each sheet delivered thereto on all four sides thereof, mechanism for operating said trimmer, a clutch controlling the operation of said last named mechanism, clutch operating means, and a lever operated by said cam and connected with said clutch operating means to automatically actuate the same.

In apparatus of the character. described, sheet feeding means, sheet trimming means adapted to trim sheets successively delivered thereto from the sheet feeding means, and a device movable in one direction to support each sheet as it is being delivered to the sheet trimming means and. movable in the opposite direction to facilitate removal of Waste portions of each sheet trirmned by said sheet trimming means.

In apparatus of the character described, sheet feeding means, sheet trimming means adapted to trim sheets successively delivered thereto from the sheet feeding means, a'pivoted element movable in one direction to support each sheet as it is being delivered to the sheet trimming means and movable in the opposite direction to facilitate removal of waste portions of each sheet trimmed by said sheet trimming means, and means for rocking saidelement in opposite directions.
15. In apparatus of the character described,
sheet feeding ,means, sheet trimming means adapted to trim sheets successively delivered thereto from the, sheet'feeding means, a device movable in one direction to support each sheet as it is being delivered to the sheet trimming means and movable in the opposite direction to facilitate removal of waste portions of each sheet trimmed by said sheet trimming means, and means controlling the operation of the sheet trimming'means and connectedwith said device to operate the same. v

In apparatus of the character described, sheet feeding means, a table or die plate onto which sheets are successively delivered from the sheet feeding means, a device movable into and out of the plane of the table or die plate to support each sheet as it is being delivered thereto and to facilitate removal of waste portions of sheets trimmed thereon, means for moving said device into and out of the plane of the table or die plate, and a trimmer adapted to trim each sheet as it is delivered onto said table or die plate from said sheet; feeding means.

In apparatus of the character described, sheet feeding means, movable means and stationary means over which sheets are successively delivered from the sheet feeding means, a trimmer adapted to trim each sheet as it is delivered over said stationary means, and means for moving said movable means into and out of the plane of the stationary means to support each sheet delivered thereto and'facilitate removal of waste from each sheet trimmed thereon.
18..In apparatus of the character described, sheet feeding 'means, sheet trimming means adapted to trim sheets successively delivered thereto from the sheet feeding means, stationary bridge pieces and a movable plate over which the ing means, trimming means arranged forwardlyof the plate, means for feeding the sheets forwardly of the plate and successively to the sheet trimming means, mechanism for operating the sheet trimming means whereby it is caused to trim each sheet deliveredthereto, and means for moving said plate into and out of operative position with respect to the sheet trimming ,means as each sheet is delivered thereto and trimmed thereby respectively. 4

In apparatus of the character described, sheet feeding means, sheet trimming adapted to trim sheets successively delivered thereto from the sheet feeding means, a device movable in one direction tosupport each' sheet 'as it is being delivered 'to the sheet trimming means and movable in the opposite direction tojfacilitate clearance ofv waste portions of 'each sheet trimmed by said sheet trimming means, mechanism controlling the operation of the sheet trimming means and including an element operated.v by the sheet feeding means, and connections between said element and said device for operating the same.
