Abstract
751,604. Feeding sheets. FRENCH, L. J. B. R. Jan. 4, 1955 [Jan. 4, 1954], No. 158/54. Class 100 (1). [Also in Groups XV and XXX] Piles.-In book cover applying mechanism, the covers are piled on a table 32 mounted on a post 33 formed with rack teeth 34 engaged by a gear wheel 35 rigidly associated with a gear wheel 36 of larger diameter driven from a small diameter associated gear wheel 37 with which is associated a ratchet wheel 38, both on a shaft 41. The ratchet wheel 38 is operated by a pawl 39 carried by a link 40 suspended from shaft 41 and connected by a rod 42 with an eccentric 43 operated from the driving shaft 44 which is driven from a motor 6 (not shown) each time a cover is applied. A pawl 95 serves to prevent reversal of movement of the ratchet wheel 38 and the pawl 95 can be actuated by a push rod 96 to set the mechanism initially. The pawl 39 is held out of operative engagement with the ratchet wheel 38 by a shaped end 100 of a lever 98 fulcrumed at 99 and connected at its other end to the spindle 97 of a solenoid G, the solenoid G being energized by a microswitch F which engages the top cover 101 of the pile and operates when the level of the pile falls below a certain limit, not necessarily each time a cover is removed. Separating.-The top cover 101 is lifted at its leading edge by a series of suction cups 62 along a bar 61 mounted on an arm 63 pivoted at 64 to a slide 60 and spring pressed to the raised position shown. The cups 62 are connected with suitable mechanism for obtaining reduced air pressure through the medium of a sliding valve 90 moved in one direction to provide suction by a lever 65 and released when the cover has been moved by a bar 91. The lever 65 is pivoted at 66 and connected by a rod 67 to a bell crank lever 68 having a follower 69 engaging a cam face 70 on a disc 48 on the shaft 44, the lever 65 first pressing down the valve 90 and then the arm 63 to press the cups 62 into contact with the leading edge of the top cover 101. Forwarding.-The slide 60 with the arm 63 and bar 61 is moved forwardly to position a cover over a platform 74, by a lever 58 connected by a pin 59 and having a pin 56 and slot 57 connection with a lever 54 pivoted at 55. The lever 54 is operated from a cam groove 49 on the disc 48 by a follower 50 on a link 51 having pin 52 and slot 53 connection with the lever 54. The cover is released by the bar 91 engaging the valve 90 and moving it upwardly, the bar 91 being raised by a lever 92 pivoted at 93 and actuated by a cam 94 on the disc 48. The motor 6 (not shown) which operates the shaft 44, is started by a relay energized by switches operated by levers in the path of the book to be covered. Specification 728,221, [Group XV], is referred to.
