Convertible close and open freplaces; grates; doors; dampers; outlets to chimneys.-A selfcontained convertible closed and open fireplace comprises a casing 1 having a front opening containing bars 2 and closable by doors 14, 14<a>; a partition 12 and an inclined baffle 13 forming between them and the rear of the casing a flue communicating at its lower and upper ends respectively with the fire and with the upper part of the stove; a damper 25 or other means for differentially controlling the draught passing from either end of this flue to the chimney outlet 9; and means for regulating the speed of combustion in any position of opening of the doors 14, 14a and comprising in the stove shown, a hit and miss air valve 23 in the hinged ash-pit door 20, and openings 29, 29a in the grate support 5 which admit the air respectively to the front of the fire and to the rear flue. The damper 25 may be operated conjointly with the sliding door 14<a> by means of a cam 27 on the door which engages the cranked end 26<a> of an arm extending from the damper shaft 26, the damper being in the, position shown in full lines when the doors are shut. The doors 14, 14a may be interconnected for simultaneous operation. The bottom grate 7 may be reciprocated by a rod 31 passing through a lug 30 on the grate support 5, and having an eye 32 engaging a pin on the grate. The flue outlet 9 may be adjusted with its axis either horizontal or vertical.
