Abstract

333,458. Barker, R. W., (American Bank Note Co.). Oct. 22, 1929. Inking - apparatus. - In a rotary printing-machine the intaglio printing- plates 12, 13 on the cylinder 10 are wiped and polished after inking by means of intermittently fed webs which are passed over axially reciprocating pads 22, 23, 68, carried at each end by reciprocating bars 32, 46, 69, which are similarly mounted and reciprocate in guides in fixed brackets 33, 47, 70 and are pressed adjustably towards the cylinder by means of springs 38, 52, 75 which can be put out of action to permit of the threading of new webs, and to permit of makeready of the press, and can be restored to their adjusted position without necessity of re-adjustment. Each bar 32 is pressed towards the cylinder 10 by means of a spring 38 which is acted upon at its lower end by a wear plate 41 acted on by a screw 40 which is adjustable in a plunger 39 capable of sliding in a housing attached to the bracket 33. An adjusting screw 34 with a bearing head 35 is adjusted in each bracket 33 and held in adjusted-position by a lock-nut 36 to limit the motion of the pad 22 towards the cylinder. The adjustment of the screws 40 controls the operative pressure of the pad. In order to throw-off the pad 32 altogether, each plunger 39 can be depressed in its housing so as to relieve the bar 32 of the pressure of the springs 38. The plunger 38 is formed with a rack 42 engaged by a pinion 43 on a shaft 44 which is rotated by a crank-arm 45 when it is desired to insert a new strip of wiping material, or to change a printing-plate. The crank-arm 45 is connected by a link 61 to a similar arm 60 on a shaft 59 of a pinion which depresses the plunger 54 in order to throw-off the wiping-pad 23 simultaneously with the pad 22. The shaft 59 is operated by a bent lever 65 and a lever arm 64 which form a toggle normally held in a stable closed position with the bent end of the link 65 against the shaft 63 of the arm 64. A latch 67 normally locks an arm 66 on the shaft 63, and when the latch is released the arm 66 is operated by hand to break the toggle and depress the plungers 54, 39. The throw-off mechanism for the polishing pad 68 is operated by an independent lever mechanism 84 - - 87, fitted with a latch 88, all operated in a similar manner to the corresponding mechanism for the wiping pads.
