238,743. Penrose & Co., Ltd., A. W., and Owen, M. Oct. 29, 1924. Inking-apparatus.-The ink is removed from the surface of the engraved cylinder of an intaglio printing-machine, by two scrapers 29, 21, the first of which is of relatively soft material, such as celluloid, and removes the bulk of the ink, and the second of which removes the ink from the raised parts of the cylinder in the usual way. Either of the scrapers may be inclined to the axis of the cylinder so as to give a slight transverse movement to the ink. The scraping- devices are carried on a frame 3 pivoted on the shaft 2 of the engraved roller 1. To a rectangular bar 26 fixed in the frame is adjustably secured a bar 27 to which is attached the celluloid scraper blade 29. Lugs 38 attached to the bar 26 carry screws 34, 35 loosely connected to the bar 27 and to a plate 30 respectively. A stiffener plate 22, to which the main scraper blade 21 of thin steel is secured by a clamp 20, is attached to the plate 30. Packing-pieces 32, 33 are placed between the parts 26, 30 to give the scraper blade the required inclination to the cylinder axis. The consequent adjustment to move one end of the scraper forward relatively to the other end due to this inclination is obtained by the screws 34 and by making the stiffener plate 22 wider at one end than at the other. Pressure is applied to the scraper 21 along the line of the clamp 20 by a roller 18 adjustably carried by brackets 17 on a bar 14 rotatably mounted in the frame 3, a spring 23 adjusted by a nut 37 being connected to an arm 24 on the bar and to the machine frame. Where an engraved sheet is secured on the cylinder 1, the roller 18 is lifted off the scraper 21 as the cylinder gap passes underneath the scraper, by a cam 9 on the shaft 2 actuating a slide 5 on the frame 3 carrying a pin 6 engaging a pivoted bracket 10, one arm 11 of which bears against an arm 13 fixed on the bar 14.
