Abstract

Buffers.-In a railway or like vehicle buffer of the kind in which the buffing springs are contained in a casing 1 fixed to the outer side of the vehicle headstock 4, a pad 10 of indiarubber is interposed between the buffer case 1 and the headstock 4 so as to form a cushioning device augmenting the action of the buffer springs, the usual securing-bolts 11 passing through the. pad 10. In order to increase the lateral stability of the buffer metal stop blocks 12 are secured to the headstock and are adapted to abut against the flanges 9 of the case 1 or against suitable lugs or bearing surfaces formed on the latter. The rubber pad 10 may be formed either as a plain sheet or as a sheet perforated with a series of holes; or, as shown in Fig. 9, a number of truncated conical projections 15 may be formed on each side of a main body. portion 10, or, as shown in Fig. 10, the projections may be in the form of ribs; or, in a further construction, concentric rings of rubber may pass through perforations in a metal plate.
