Abstract
331,876. Patrick, J. C. April 10, 1929. Recovering waste lubricants.-Used mineral lubricating oils, e.g. from internal-combustion engines, are purified by (1) removing water e.g. by settling, (2) heating and agitating the waterfree oil with sulphuric acid, (3) separating the oil from the resulting sludge and vaporizing the volatile constituents contained by heating to a temperature below that at which the oil distils or is cracked; and (4) adding an adsorptive reagent, e.g. fuller's earth, and drawing off the supernatant oil. An oxide whose carbonate is insoluble in water, e.g. calcium or barium oxide, may be added to the fuller's earth.
