Abstract
330,661. M³ller, W. J., and Hiller, H. March 19, 1929. Alumina; aluminates.-Bauxite is treated with aluminate lye of 20-22 BaumÚ at temperatures above 190 C., and at a pressure corresponding to the vapour pressure at this temperature. The mixture of alumina lye and bauxite may be kept in a continuously progressive movement through the decomposition autoclave by means of a high pressure pump, and allowed to issue from the reaction chamber through a loaded valve or through a corresponding counter-pressure pump. The red slime is separated from the reaction mixture, and the aluminium hydrate caused to separate in a manner known per se. In examples, using a bauxite from Salzburg, 96 per cent of the alumina present goes into solution when treated at 200 with a lye of 20 BaumÚ; using a Hungarian bauxite, 62 per cent goes into solution when treated with a 22 BaumÚ lye at 230 and an excess pressure of 25 atmospheres, and 93 per cent when treated at a temperature of 280-290 and at about 100 atmospheres pressure. In this process, no concentration of the aluminate lye is required at any period (except the concentration by evaporation of the wash liquors to 22 BaumÚ).
