Cigarette-making machines. - In a cut-off mechanism for continuous-rod machines in which a narrow cutting blade travels at high speed across the path of the cigarette rod, without any movement of the blade and its support parallel to the axis of the rod, the blade 34 is carried by the shaft of a high-speed electric motor 27 revolving about a second axis different from that of its shaft. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the blade 34 is mounted on arms 33 on the shaft 32 of the motor 27, which is secured upon a shaft 26 parallel to the cigarette rod C and driven from the main drive shaft 10 through spur gearing 12, 13, bevel gearing 17, 18, and helical gears 21, 25. The motor 27 is balanced by a counterweight 31, and the blade 34 is set at a slight angle in order to compensate for the slight axial movement of the cigarette rod during cutting. In order to time the cutting exactly with the rotation of the motor 27 about the shaft 26, the motor is of the synchronous type and is supplied with current by an alternating generator 24 driven from the helical gear 21. In a modification, Fig. 7, the motor 27 is rotated about an axis perpendicular to the cigarette rod C by mounting it on a vertical shaft 56 driven through bevel gears 54, 55 and helical gearing 46, 47, 50, 51; and the generator 24 is driven from the shaft 19 of the gears 47, 50 through bevel gears 48, 49.
