330,120. United Water Softeners, Ltd., and Lawrence, H. S. May 17, 1929. Addition to 302,744. Purifying liquids. - Salt for regenerating base-exchange material in water-softening apparatus is moistened so as to convert it into a slurry and is drawn into the apparatus by syphon action. Normally, crude water flows through pipes b, e to a distributor at the top of a softening vessel a having base exchange material in the upper part and a filter bed in the lower, and softened water leaves by a pipe k and outlet l. For regeneration, salt is placed in a box g, a three-way valve m is set to close the outlet and to connect the pipe k with a. drain pipe n, and another three-way valve h is set to allow sufficient water to pass into the salt box g to convert the salt into a slurry. Hard water is cut off and the box g placed in communication with the pipe e. Water already in the softening tank runs out through the drain pipe n, and as the connection at the outlet-pipe k with the vessel a is below the valve h syphon action takes place and draws the salt slurry into the vessel through the pipe e. The apparatus is then flushed with hard water.
