Abstract

329,405. Gramophone Co., Ltd., and Browne, C. O. Feb. 25, 1929. Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus. - Apparatus for transmitting or recording electric oscillations by the aid of light comprises a tube containing two outer electrodes and a mercury column electrode between the two outer electrodes from which arc discharges take place to opposite sides of the common mercury electrode. As shown, a horizontal quartz tube 1, preferably restricted at 9, 10, is turned up at the ends 2, 3, in which lead-in wires 4, 5 are sealed, and also at the centre, and is filled with mercury, the central upstanding part receiving a plug, of cotton wool 7 through which the lead-in wire 8 passes. The oscillating current, which may be of acoustic frequency, is impressed through a transformer 11 and traverses the arcs in series through stabilizing resistances 12, 13, and steady current from a battery 14 traverses the arcs in parallel. Heating coils 15, 16 vaporize some of the mercury to assist in striking the arcs. Either arc may be used for recording or transmitting, or two records or transmissions may be effected simultaneously.
