Abstract

Cylinders, construction of, valve seatings and passages of. - Cast iron cylinder barrels b are secured in a common aluminium or aluminium alloy jacket-casting a by pressing them into rings c and d which are moulded into the upper and lower walls of the jacket casting. The rings may be of cast iron or other suitable material and are keyed into the casting by the dove-tail of the outer faces. The upper surfaces of the top rings are recessed to accommodate the flanged upper ends of the barrels, the lower ends of the latter being reduced in diameter to provide shoulders which contact with the top faces of the bottom rings. The rings of each group may be made separately, or integral, or joined in pairs, as shown in Fig. 4, and they may be provided with lugs into which the head-securing studs or bolts may be fitted. The joints between the barrels and rings are made watertight. Members provided with valve seats may also be pressed into rings moulded into the aluminium block.
