Abstract

329,247. Vollmerhaus, E. July 25, 1929, [Convention date]. Angular bending; mandrels.-In a machine of the rotary grooved bending former type for cold bending seamless boiler tubes, welded steam and gas pipes &c. to small radius, the outer surface of the tube is embraced by a chain, the connecting plates of which are pivoted near the inner edges of the links, which are grooved to embrace half the pipe diameter. The tube is secured by the grooved jaw h of a clamp to a grooved extension e from the grooved bending former b. which is rotated by gearing c. To the clamp is secured one end of a chain consisting of a series of grooved links i connected to each other by plates k. The chain is pressed against the tube by a pressure member m carrying a bolt q loosely connected to a screw p. The member m carries a bevelled strip n which at the end of the bending operation may engage a bevelled link u on the chain to prevent flattening of the end of the tube on withdrawal by an internal mandrel. The free end of the chain is provided with a weighted cord. The mandrel is carried by an adjustable bracket y and is supported in a bracket w having adjustable jaws x to prevent bending of the mandrel.
