E. ROBINSON PiPE BENDING MACHINE Filed May 12. 1921 Patented dept. 39, 195.24%.
UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD ROBINiSOh-T, 0F RQSELLE PARK,
NEW JERSEY, .ASEiIG-NOR TO THE TEXAS COMPANY, OF NEW YQBK, N. Y., A. CORPORATION OF TEXAS.
PIPE-BENDING MACHINE.
Application filed May 12,
T 0 all whom it WI/iY/j/ concern.
Be it known that I, EDWARD ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Roselle Park, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Bending Machines. of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to machines for producing bends in metal pipes and it has for one object to provide a simple and iniproved device of this character that shall be adapted to make not only 90 bends. but also return bends. :3 bends, and bends of any desired form, without damage to the pipe.
(lther objects and advantages of my invention will be set forth hereinafter, and. I will now describe the same with reference to the drawings and point out the novel features thereof in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a pipe bending device arranged and constructed in accordance with my invention, and constituting one embodiment thereof.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the machine shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail taken on the line of Fig. 1.
The machine illustrated in the drawings comprises a base plate 10 having a pair of bending rolls 11 and 12 rotatively mounted on a pair of spaced studs 13 and 1 1. The bending roller 11 performs the function of a movable guide which permits the pipe to freely move along without swinging as a whole. as it is being bent around the roller 12.
A bending block is secured between a pair of side plates 16 which. constitute a clevis and are mounted. on the stud 1 s with the roller 12 interposed between them. The plates 16 are extended as shown in Figure 2 to support a U-bolt clamp 1.7 and a handle lever 18 by which the bending machine may be operated.
The rollers 11 and 12.and the block are grooved to correspond in a general way to the curvature of the pipe although the machine is adapted to be employed. for bending pipes of various sizes within the limits imposed by the dimensions of the particular machine employed.-
1921. Serial No. 468,920.
it is of course evident that the machine may be built to any size desired but that any one machine cannot accommodate a pipe which is too large in size to be freely introduced between the side plates of the bending block.
The operation of the machine will be understood from the description of its parts and need only be outlined as follows: To bend a piece of pipe in the machine the same will be inserted as shown in Figure 1 and fixed. to the bending block by the U- bolt clamp 17. Before bending, it is desirable that the pipe shall be filled with sand in order to prevent buckling.
The handle lever 18 is next swung from the full line position of Figure 1 to the dotted line position. The pipe advances longitudinally and is free to do so by reason of the motion of the roller 11 and is bent around the roller 12, the bending block performing the function of a forming tool.
it is evident that the bend may be continued as far as desired and that there is nothing to prevent the formation of a return bend or U bend in a pipe, either near its end or at an intermediate point in its length.
t will also be seen that it is possible by the use of this machine to make an S bend in the pipe either near its end or intermediate its length and the machine may be put to various other uses.
Attention is particularly directed to the fact that my improved. machine has great flexibility and can accomplish complicated and unusual bends.
,aipparatus of preferred form and construction has been illustrated and described for the purpose of showing a way in which this invention may be practiced v but the inventive thought upon which the application is based is broader than this illustrative embodiment thereof and no limitations are therefore intended other than those imposed by the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is:
l. A. pipe bending machine comprising a rotatably mounted bending roller having a peripheral groove therein, a pair of spaced plates pivotally mounted coaxially with and on opposite sides of the bending roller, a bending block secured between the spaced plates and spaced from the bending roller, means for securing one end of a pipe to be bent to the bending block between the block and the bending roller, a movable guide spaced from the bending block and bending roller for guidng the unsecured end of the pipe, and means secured between said plates for manually bending the pipe around the bending roller.
2. A pipe bending machine comprising a pair of pivotally mounted spaced bending rollers each provided With a peripheral conceve groove adapted to receive a cylindrical shaped pipe, 3 pair of spaced side plates pivotally mounted coaxially With and on opposite sides of one of the bending rollers a bending bloc-l; secured between the side plates :1 spaced from one of the bending rollers, means for securing a pipe in position between the two bending rollers and between one of the rollers and the bending block, and means for manually turning the bending block to bend the pipe around one of the bending rollers.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of Mary 1921.
EDWARD ROBINSON. 11. 5.1
