14 Claims. My invention relates, more particularly, to machines for the cold bending of flanged bars, as
for example and more especially angle bars, more particularly, though not exclusively, for producing frames such as bed spring frames, cot ends, and frames for other furniture.
My primary object is to provide a construction of machine by which such bars may be economically and expeditiously bent to the desired shape and with the minimum of breakage; and other objects as will be manifest from the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which disclose an embodiment of my invention adapted for the simultaneous bending of two angle bars:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the machine, with a portion of the bar-supporting table at the feed-in end of the machine, broken away, the parts of the machine being shown in the'positions they occupy upon being withdrawn to initial position following the producing of the first bend in both bars simultaneously.
Figure 2 is an enlarged broken section taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.

The machine illustrated comprises a frame of general T-shape in plan presenting the angularly disposed sections 8 and 9, these sections having bed portions Ill and II, respectively.
The bed portion Ii) carries a horizontal circular abutment member l2, shown as a roll, about which the bending of the angle bars, to be bent, is effected, the roll being shown as of such diameter as to produce the desired curvature of the bars at their bent portions.

The upper face of the bed it is grooved longitudinally thereof as represented at ill (Fig. 6), this groove containing a bar it! forming a holder for the bars to be bent and along which the latter are slidable, the holder bar it having a narrow, 10 deep, groove is extending longitudinally thereof, one wall of this groove being cut away along its entire length as represented to form a horizontal seating surface Ell for the purpose hereinafter described.
In the particular machine illustrated, where two angle bars are to be simultaneously bent, one of the bars represented at 2i is applied to the holder bar l8 to the position shown wherein it extends lengthwise thereof with its vertical flange 22 extending downwardly into the groove l9 and its horizontal flange Z3 resting on the seating surface 20; and the other of the two bars and represented at 24 is flatwise superposed at its horizontal flange 25 on the flange 23 of the bar 25 2! with the ends of these bars in registration and with the vertical flange 26 of the bar 26 extending upwardly and in vertical alinement with the vertical flange 22 of the bar i l. The vertical flanges 22 and 26 thus oppose the surface of the 30 holder represented at 2?, the holder it being so disposed, as shown, that the surface Ell thereof is tangential to the member l2 and is located at substantially the same elevation as this member, whereby the bars 2! and 24% when initially positioned in the holder member to extendacross and beyond the periphery of the member l2, preparatory to the bending operation, will oppose the periphery of this member and be in position to be bent about the latter by the mechanism hereinafter described.
As the holder member it is shown as of relatively short length, the machine is provided with a supporting table for the bars 2! and 2t comprising horizontal rollers 28 journalled on the frame portion 8 crosswise thereof and arranged in a series extending lengthwise of this frame portion.
Provision is made in the machine illustrated for first engaging the protruding ends of the bars 2t and 24'. to be bent and bending them about the periphery of the member 52 and thereupon crowding the vertical flanges 22 and 26 of such bent portions forcibly, by a die action, against, and into conformity with, the periphery of the member 55 l2 and simultaneously straightening the horizontal flanges 23 and 25 of the bars in case of distortion thereof during the bending operation referred to, a description of the mechanism shown for this purpose being as follows:
Slidably mounted on the bed H of the frame portion 9 at undercut ways 29 and shown as extending at substantially a right angle to the holder bar 18, is a ram-forming member 39 provided at its forward end with a horizontal roller 3! located in the bifurcated end portion 32 of the ram and journalled thereon at roller bearings represented at 33 and 33 The roller 3| contains at its central portion an annular peripheral groove 34 for receiving the horizontal flanges 23 and 25 of the bars 2! and 24 and engages, at its peripheral portions above and below the groove 34, with the vertical flanges 26 and 22, respectively, of the bars, the roller 3| being so positioned that in the sliding of the ram to the left in Fig. l to the position shown in Fig. 7, the ends of the bars 2! and 24 which project beyond the abutment member 52, will be bent at right angles to the portions of the bars in the holder member 18.
The bending mechanism also comprises the die forming member above referred to and represented generally at 35, this die member, shown as formed of upper and lower sections and respectively, being located in a recess 38 in the ram 30 to the rear of the roll 3 l. The die member 35 contains an arcuate recess 39 in position to receive the bent portions of the horizontal flanges 23 and 25, and presents upper and lower arcuate die-forming surfaces 43 and 4|, respectively, positioned to engage the upper and lower vertical flanges 26 and 22, respectively, when the rain is moved to the position shown in Fig. 7. The arcs of the surfaces to and AI are described about a radius of a length equal to the radius about which the periphery of the member [2 is described plus the thickness of the vertical flanges 22 and 26 and the die member is so positioned that when it is moved to the position shown in Fig. '7 and into engagement with these vertical flanges, the surfaces 40 and M will be concentric with the periphery of the member l2 and thus insure the perfect rounding of the bent portions of the bars, the continued engagement of the roller 3| with the bent ends of the bars after passing the center of the member l2, as the die moves into operating position, insuring the desired right angle bend.
It may be here stated that in the forming of a closed rectangular frame such as that indicated in Fig. 1 the bars are bent in succession at four different portions along their lengths to form the desired closed frame, the adjacent opposing ends of the bar being thereafter connected together in any suitable way, as for example by welding thereto an interior angle member (not shown) positioned to span the joint.
It is desirable that means be provided for supporting the bars at their bent portions following the initial bending thereof and to this end the machine is shown as provided with a table 42 carried by the bed It] and presenting a supporting portion for the bars upon which the latter become superposed upon the initial and subsequent bending operations as represented of the frame shown in part by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
It is also desirable that gaging means be provided to serve as a guide to the operator in positioning the bars lengthwise of the machine preliminary to each bending operation to insure the production of frames of the desired dimensions, this being accomplished in the machine shown by providing three stop devices 43, 44 and i5 on the frame portion 8 at the end thereof opposite the feed-in end. The stop 43 shown as provided for the initial positioning of the bars in the machine is adapted to be moved into and out of stop position and likewise the stop 44 which is provided to gage the forming of the short sides of the frame. The stop 45 is used for gaging the long sides of the frame and is adapted to be adjusted toward and away from the bending mechanism for producing different lengths of frames. The stop 43 shown as in the form of a bar is journalled at a depending extension 46 midway between its ends on a shaft 41 extending lengthwise of, and mounted on, the frame portion 8 and is provided with a crank pin 18 connected, through the medium of a link .9, with a crank pin 56 on a tubular shaft 5! journalled in the frame of the machine and equipped with a hand lever 52 for oscillating it to move the stop 43 into and out of stop position as illustrated of the stop member 5% in Fig. 4. The stop member H5 likewise is provided with a depending extension 53 between its ends at which it is journalled on the shaft 41, the bar 44 having a crank pin 54 connected by a link 55 with a crank pin 56 carried by a shaft 51 journalled in the tubular shaft 5| and equipped with a hand lever 58 by which it may be oscillated to rock the stop member 44 into and out of stop position as shown in Fig. 4. The stop 4 5 is slidably mounted on the shaft 41 and held in place thereon by adjustable collars 45 on this shaft.
Any suitable means may be provided for actuating the ram 36, those shown being of the fluid pressure type and involving the piston and cylinder mechanism represented at 59 and shown as supported on the frame portion 9, the piston (not shown) of this mechanism being connected at the piston stem 60 with the outer end of the ram. Suitable fluid pressure is selectively introduced into the ends of the cylinder, exhaust from the opposite end being provided for, by any suitable control mechanism such as that shown and involving a pipe 6! leading from any suitable source of fluid pressure, pipes 232 and 63 opening into opposite ends, respectively, of the cylinder and a 4-way valve, such as is commonly known in the art connected with the several pipes and having an exhaust 64, whereby the ram may be operated as above stated under the control of the operator.
In order that the bars to be bent may be securely held against displacement on the holder member during the bending operation, the machine is provided with means for this purpose and shown as comprising a presser, forming a holddown device, represented at 65 which is pivotally supported between its ends on a pin 66 carried by lugs 6'! and 68 rising from the bed ID of the machine. One end of the member 65 is adapted to be forced down against the horizontal flange 25 of the upper bar 2Q when upward pressure is applied against the opposite end of this member through the medium of a fluid pressure operated piston and cylinder mechanism represented at 89 the piston of which (not shown) is pivoted at its stem iii to the adjacent end of the member 65 by the pin represented at H. Any suitable means for forcing the piston of this mechanism upwardly to effect clamping of the bars in place may be provided, that shown comprising an extension 12 of the fluid pressure line 6! and the provision of. a 2-way valve 13 therein of any desirable construction and operating to supply actuating fluid to the mechanism 69, or the release therefrom to permit the piston of this mechanism to lower by gravity and thus release the holddown means, under the selective control by the operator.
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction of machine embodying my invention and shown and described it as operating on a certain form of work, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it to the construction shown nor to use in operating on the particular work shown, as the construction may be variously modified and altered and work of other forms bent thereon, without departing from the spirit of my invention, as for examples, a single angle bar may be bent on the mechanism, instead of two as shown, and likewise a bar of T- shape in cross-section in which latter case the head of the T would flatwise oppose the abutment member !2 and its flange would enter the grooves in the bending roller 3| and die-member 35.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A bending machine comprising a roll forming an abutment member about which to bend simultaneously a plurality of angle bars flatwise opposed at flanges thereof with their other flanges flatwise opposing said abutment member, a bending member for bending the bars around said abutment member and having a groove to receive the flatwise opposed flanges of said bars, means restricting bodily movement of. the bend ing member to a rectilinear path on the bending member and a die member having a groove to receive said flatwise opposed flanges and operative to force the bars at their bends against said abutment member.
2. A bending machine comprising a roll forming an abutment member about which to bend a flanged bar to be bent, a ram having a bending member at one end for bending the bar around said abutment member a die member in one side thereof behind the bending member operative to force the bar at its bend against said abutment member and presenting a surface which is opposed by a side surface of the flange of said bar for securing the desired straight condition of said flange in the finished condition of the bar, and means restricting bodily movement of said bending member to a rectilinear path.
3. A bending machine comprising a roll forming an abutment member about which to bend simultaneously a plurality of angle bars flatwise opposed at flanges thereof with their other flanges flatwise opposing said abutment member, a bending member for bending the bars around said abutment member and having a groove to receive the flatwise opposed flanges of said bars, a die member having a groove to receive said flatwise opposed flanges and operative to force the bars at their bends against said abutment member, said groove being of. a width substantially equal to the combined thicknesses of said flatwise opposed flanges, whereby the desired straight con dition of said flanges in the finished condition of the bars, is insured, and means restricting bodily movement of said bending member to a rectilinear path.
4. A bending machine comprising an abutment member about which to bend simultaneously a plurality of angle bars flatwise opposed at flanges thereof with their other flanges flatwise opposing said abutment member, a support for the bars containing a groove and having a seating surface for the flanges, respectively, of one of said bars hold the bar during the bending operation, means for holding said bar against said support, and an elongated ram having means at one end thereof for bending the bar around said abutment member.
6. A bending machine comprising an abutment member about which to bend simultaneously a plurality of angle bars flatwise opposed at flanges thereof with their other flanges flatwise opposing said abutment member, a support for the bars containing a groove and having a seating surface for the flanges, respectively, of one of said bars and also having a side wall portion opposing said other flange of the other of said bars and extending to a higher elevation than said seating surface, means bearing against said last-referred-to bar for holding said bars in position on said support, and means for bending the bars around said abutment member.
7. A bending machine comprising a roll forming an abutment member about which to bend the work, a bending member for bending the work around said abutment member and having a groove for receiving a portion of the work, dividing said member into two work-bending portions, a die member having a groove alined with the groove in said bending member and dividing it into two work-bending portions operative to force the work against said abutment member, and means restricting bodily movement of said bending member to a rectilinear path.
8. A bending machine comprising a bed, a grooved holder thereon for bar material to be bent, a stepped portion on said bed beyond one end of said holder, a roller mounted on said stepped portion, means toclamp the bar material in the holder, a ram member reciprocable across said stepped portion, means guiding and restricting the movement of the ram member to a rectilinear path, a roller on the ram member at the forward end thereof engageable with the material to bend it around the first mentioned roller, and a forming die on the ram member engageable with that portion of the bar material curved about the first mentioned roller.
9. A bending machine comprising a frame having a first section, a section extending rearwardly at a right angle thereto, said first section at the top thereof having a bed, an abutment roller on the bed substantially in line with the second section, a grooved holder for the work to be bent disposed on said bed at one side of the second mentioned section, said roller being substantially in line with said holder so that the work may extend from the holder beyond the roller, a ram rectilinearly movable on the top of the second mentioned section, said ram in the forward end thereof having a bending member engageable with the work to bend the same around said roller, and a die member carried by h the ram at one side thereof in the rear of the bending member to engage that portion of the work curved about said roller.
10. A bending machine comprising a frame having a first section, a section extending rearwardly at a right angle thereto, said first section at the top thereof having a bed, an abutment roller on the bed substantially in line with the second section, a grooved holder for the work to be bent disposed on said bed at one side of the second mentioned section, said roller being substantially in line with said holder so that the work may extend from the holder beyond the roller, a ram rectilinearly movable on the top of the second mentioned section, said ram in the forward end thereof having a bending member engageable with the work to bend the same around said roller, and a die member carried by the ram at one side thereof in the rear of the bending member to engage that portion of the Work curved about said roller, a portion of the first mentioned section extending on the opposite side of the second mentioned section to the grooved holder and stop means mounted on the frame and movable over said portion, for engagement with the end of the work.

A bending machine comprising an abutment member about which to bend the bar to be bent, a bending member having a roller for engaging the bar and bending it around said abutment member, a die member operative to force the bar at its bend against said abutment member, and means restricting bodily movement of said roller and die member to a rectilinear path.
12. A bending machine comprising a roll forming an abutment member about which to bend the bar to be bent, a bending member having a roller for engaging the bar and bending it around said abutment member, a die member operative to force the bar at its bend against said abutment member, and means restricting bodily movement of said roller and die member to a rectilinear path.
13. A bending machine comprising an abutment member presenting an arcuate portion about which to bend the bar to be bent, a bending member having a roller for engaging the bar and bending it around said arcuate portion, a die member having a concaved arcuate portion adapted to engage the bar at its bend and force the bar against the arcuate portion of said abutment member, and means restricting bodily movement of said roller and die member to a rectilinear path.
14. A bending machine comprising a roll forming an abutment member presenting an arcuate portion about which to bend the bar to be bent, a bending member having a roller for engaging the bar and bending it around said abutment member, a die member having a concaved arcuate portion adapted to engage the bar at its bend and force the bar against the arcuate portion of said abutment, and means restricting bodily movement of said roller and die member to a rectilinear path.
