A detachable top lift B of leather or other material carries on a plate G attached thereto a spigot H of non- circular cross-section adapted to fit into a socket D of corresponding shape carried by a plate C let into a recess E in the heel A and is secured by a screw locking pin K accessible through a hole in the lift B and extending up through the spigot H and socket D. This screw may, as shown, have a flanged head M and be loosely supported in a hole F in the socket D, or it may be screwed into the spigot H and socket D. The screw threads on the spigot, socket, and pin may be similar to those on a gun breech block to give a quicker locking movement. A rubber or like resilient pad N may be placed between the surfaces of the heel A and metal plate G give a cushion effect. If desired, a portion G<1> of the metal plate may extend to the outside of the lift B where wear is greatest, to prevent wear on one edge. The hole in the lift B through which access is obtained to the screw K may be filled with wax or other readily removable material.
