Description

Aug. 29, 1933. J. F. WAIDELICH DETACHABLE HEEL LIFT Filed NOV. 27, 1951 VII; 1 4 a 1 s INVENTOR.
John E Waideh'ch Joamwdd 16mm A TTORNEY Patented Aug. 29, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application November 27, 1931 Serial No. 577,542
5 Claims.
This invention relates to foot wear and has particular reference to heels.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a detachable top lift for a shoe heel which 5 may be quickly positioned on a leather, wooden or other well known type of heel without special tools or instruments.
Another object of my invention is to provide a heel top lift which is not only detachable and permits readily replacement of a new one, but is also interchangeable with the top lift of the other shoe in order to provide even wear upon the top lifts.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a detachable heel top lift of the type shown by Patent #1,409,431, but of such structure that it can be secured directly to the heel, without an intermediate securing means, by a simple drilling operation and thus but slightly increasing the cost of the shoe.
Further objects of the invention reside in the means for preventing relative rotation of the parts and the manner in which the top lift is secured to the heel.
With these and other objects which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing wherein two convenient embodiments of my invention are set forth.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of a heel to which my invention is applied.
Fig. 2 is a view, similar to Fig. 1, of a modified embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 3 is a partial cross sectional view of the heel with the top lift removed.
Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the heel with the top lift removed.
Fig. 5 is a side view of the top lift.
Fig. 6 is a top view of the top lift.
In Fig. 1, reference character 1 designates the main body of the heel, preferably formed of wood v, or the like secured to the shoe 2 in the usual manner. 3 is the top lift which has secured thereto a circular plate 4 by means of some suitable fastening means such as nails 5. The circular plate 4 which is located in a similarly shaped drilled recess 10 in the assembly contains a centrally located threaded aperture into which a pin 6 is threadedly engaged. A drilled hole 7 of substantially the same diameter as the pin 6, extends through the main heel body 1 and also through the inside of the shoe and receives the pin 6 to hold the top lift to the main heel body by frictional engagement. Altho in practice it has not been found necessary, the hole '7 may be provided with a soft metal sleeve to increase the frictionalvengagement with the pin 6.
To remove the top lift 3 from the heel 1 it is 60 only necessary to insert a nail or the like of slightly less diameter than the pin 6 into the hole 7 and drive the pin 6 outof the hole 7.
To prevent the rotation of the top lift 3 relative to the main heel body 1, a dowel like joint is provided which consists of one or more, preferably two, pins 8 which are driven, screwed or fitted into the heel portion 1 in such a manner that a substantial segment of the pins 8 extends out into the plate receiving recess 10. Corresponding to the location of the pins 8 relative to the plate 4 when the top lift is correctly inserted in the heel 1 and the extent that the segments of the pins 8 extend out into the recess 10, pin receiving channels 9 are drilled in the periphery of the circular plate 4. It will be obvious that with this type of rotation preventing means that the maximum leverage the plate is susceptible of is utilized; that the plate 4 can be more readily seated in the recess that if the pins 8 were wholly within the recess and the plate 4 was provided with pin receiving holes; and the size of the plate and recess can be materially reduced and yet provide the same lever arm provided by a larger plate with pin receiving holes.
As shown in Fig. 2, the general arrangement of parts is substantially the same as disclosed in Fig. 1, with the exception that the friction pin 6 has been supplemented by a screw 6 which 0' is inserted from the inside of the shoe 2 into the hole 7' extending through the heel 1 and threadedly engaged with the threaded aperture of the plate 4 which is secured to the top lift 3 by fastening means 5; the screw 6' holding the assembly together.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided simple means for securing a detachable top lift to a main heel body in which the heel body is prepared to receive the top lift by a simple drilling operation providing a hole longitudinally of the heel and a recess in the face of the heel which abuts the top lift, the hole and recess having coincident centers.
Having thus described my invention it will be seen that changes and modifications may be made therein by those skilled in the art Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and I do not wish to be limited to the details disclosed, but what I claim is: 1
1. In a heel, the combination with the main body having an aperture therein, of a detachable top lift having a plate secured thereto provided with a threaded aperture, a threaded fastening means positioned in said body aperture and engaging said threaded aperture to secure said lift to said body, said body having a recess of a shape and depth to receive said plate, a locking pin secured in said body and located in the periphery of said recess and a channel in the periphery of said plate coacting with said pin to prevent relative movement of said body and said lift.
2. In a heel, the combination with the main body having an aperture therein, of a detachable top lift having fastener receiving means secured thereto, a fastening member located in said body aperture and coacting with said means to secure said lift to said body, said body having a recess to receive said means, and locking means directly secured in the periphery of said recess and coacting with said first mentioned means to prevent relative rotation between said body and said lift.
3. In a heel, the combination with the main body having an aperture therein, of a detachable top lift having fastener receiving means secured thereto, a fastening member located in said body aperture and coastin with said means to secure said lift to said body, saidbody having a recess to receive said means, locking means consisting of pin and channel members located in the peripheries of said recess and said first mentioned means coasting to prevent relative rotation between said body and said lift.
l. In a heel, the combination with the main body, of a detachable top lift having a circular plate secured thereto, said body having a circular recess of a shape and depth to receive said plate, means to detachably secure said plate and lift to said body, a locking pin secured in said body and located in the periphery of said recess and a channel in the periphery of said plate coacting with said pin to prevent relative movement between said body and said lift.
5..In a heel, the combination with the main body having a circular aperture therein, of a fiat top lift having a fiat cylindrical plate secured to one side thereof, a fastening member located in said body aperture directly connected to said plate to removably secure said lift to said body, said body having a circular recess concentric with said aperture to receivesaid plate, pins located in said recess and directly secured in said body, and openings in said plate receiving said pins to prevent relative rotation between said body and said lift.
