Abstract

320,029. Morisse, A. May 1, 1928. Studs, externally applied.-Relates to detachable studs for boots or shoes for football and like sports, of the kind in which socket parts having projecting plates adapted to be located between the inner and outer soles are provided with recesses to receive complementary shanks on the stud parts. The socket portion has one or more laterally-projecting wings or flanges 11 of substantial area, and the stud has a head 3 of substantial length, preferably of rubber, and an integral base 1 of substantial thickness projecting laterally between the shank and head and formed with flats to be gripped manually or with a suitable tool. Complementary means are provided on the inner wall of the socket and the outer wall of the shank for detachably anchoring them together. The complementary means may comprise screw-threads, or a frusto-conical or frustopyramidal shank adapted to be forced into an undercut socket and locked by means additional to the correspondingly tapered forms of the socket and shank. A tapered screw 19, Fig. 11, may engage a corresponding recess 6, Fig. 3, in the stud, the shank of the stud being frusto-conical. A square screw-thread 4, Fig. 4, may engage a corresponding thread in the socket. A frustoconical shank may have grooves 5, Fig. 6, to clear lugs 20, Fig. 14, in the socket as the shank is inserted, a groove 7 formed in the shank receiving the lugs on rotation of the fully inserted stud through, say, 90‹. In this form, the socket may have a conical projection 19<a> from its bottom, to give additonal security. The shank may have grooves 8, Fig. 7, of triangular section on two of its parallel sides, and a groove 9 on its bottom face, to facilitate insertion of the shank into its complementary socket, Fig. 15. A foursided frusto-pyramidal shank, Fig. 8, may be formed with hole 10 for engagement by a screw 23, Fig. 18, for which a lateral hole is provided in the outsole. According to the Provisional Specifications, the stud may be of wood, ebonite, compressed paper, leather, or moulded formaldehyde condensation product. Screw threads on one part may have longitudinal grooves so that the thread may act as a tap to cut its way into the other part. The shank may have an inserted socket of soft alloy to co-operate with a screw such as shown in Fig. 11.
