Abstract

329,145. Appareils et Evaporateurs Kestner- April 3, 1929, [Convention date]. Addition to 279,037. Calcium nitrate.-In a modification of the process of the parent Specification, calcium nitrate is prepared by the action of nitric acid on calcium carbonate in the presence of a solution of calcium nitrate. Bv this means, the heat evolved is dissipated in a larger mass, thereby avoiding a large rise in temperature and a corresponding loss of nitrogen oxides. The solution may be mixed, prior to the reaction, either with the nitric acid or with the carbonate of lime. The apparatus used in the parent Specification may be modified so that a mixture of nitric acid and cooled calcium nitrate solution passes over pieces of carbonate of lime; or for treatment of sediment of carbonate of lime, such as proceeding from caustification or from the production of ammonium sulphate by the gypsum process, the apparatus illustrated in Fig. 2 may be employed. The sediment is fed into tank 15, and there mixed with calcium nitrate solution from tank 11. The suspension is pumped through a cooler 14, nitric acid added thereto at 16, and passed into a cyclone separator 6, when the froth is broken up. Carbon dioxide is drawn off by the pump 9, and calcium nitrate solution collects in 11. Specification 289,370 is referred - to.
