Cigarette-making machines. - In means for cutting cigarette rods into lengths, the knife is mounted on a rotating carrier so as to be oscillated relatively to the carrier in the direction of movement of the rod. Fig. 1 shows the knife blade 49 attached to a holder 17 which is pivoted at 20 to a carrier 21 mounted on a rotating shaft 22. The knife holder 17 is oscillated about its pivot 20 by a rod 30 passing through the shaft 22 and formed with an arm 38 engaging a fixed cam 39. Tubes 14, 15, surrounding the rod 10 to be cut and separated by a gap through which the knife passes, are carried by a holder 13 which is reciprocated synchronously with the knife by means of an arm 46 and cam 44 adjustably fixed on the shaft 22. An adjustable spring 40 acts on the end of the rod 30. The knife blade 49 is held in grooves 53, Fig. 4, in the holder 17 by a resilient member 54 formed with projections 55 engaging the grooves 53, with tongues 56, 57 bearing on the blade, and with a locking-lug 58 which passes through a slot 59 in the blade and engages one of a series of notches 60 in the holder 7. The knife blade 49 is sharpened by engagement during its rotation with a grinding-disc 61, Fig. 9. This disc is axially adjustable by a screw 64 in a bearing 62, which is angularly adjusted about a pivot 75 by means of a screw 67. The post 66 carrying the bearing 62 is adjustable vertically by rack gearing 69, 70, and about its axis by gearing 71, 78.
