Abstract

328,598. Marks, Sir G. C., (Electro Thermal Co.). Jan. 28, 1929. Rectal appliances; dilating instruments.- Rectal dilators comprise an inner member 4 of hard rubber or other suitable material with a central bore 22 surrounded by an elastic cover 5 which is thickened at its base 28. The top portion 27 of the cover 5 is thinner and capable of greater expansion than the middle portion, which is reinforced with inner ribs 26. The lower portion 28 of the cover 5 conforms in shape to and engages with the lower disc shaped portion 6 of the member 5. The device is inflated bv means of a pressure bulb provided with an air inlet valve, and connected by means of the tube 2 with a chamber 18 and valve 10 in valve casing 9 fitted into the base of the member 5, the air entering the space between the cover 6 and member 5 through the central bore 22 and side ports 23, The device is deflated on unseating the valve 10 by screwing in a rod 19 attached to a screw 20, one side of which is flattened so as to leave a channel 31 for the escaping air.
