Abstract
328,544. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (Pilot Laboratory, Inc.). Oct. 3, 1928. Soaps, waxes, and oils are bleached by the action of a mixture of organic or of organic and inorganic peroxides, the peroxides being mutually activating in their bleaching action, or one serving to activate the other. A suitable mixture is obtained by adding water and caustic soda to hydrogen peroxide, then adding a mixture of benzoyl chloride and fumaryl chloride and a fatty acid chloride such as capryl lauryl or oleyl chloride. The peroxides are washed and dried and may be ground with an inert filler such as calcium sulphate, magnesium sulphate or starch. Benzoyl peroxide may be activated by mixing with 5 to 10 per cent butyric, caproic or capric acid peroxides. Other peroxides mentioned are peroxides of crotonic acid, valeric acid, cinnamic acid, and phenylacetyl, succinyl, phthalyl and citryl peroxides. To bleach colouring matter dissolved in oil an inactive organic peroxide is mixed with the peroxide of a fatty acid obtained from an oil such as cocoanut oil. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 102,967, [Class 58, Grain &c.].
