Abstract

327,935. Fairweather, W., (Singer Manufacturing Co.). Aug. 22, 1929. Folding-devices.-A strip-reversing binder disposed crosswise to the line of stitching, is provided with spaced delivery lips oblique to the hinder length and with a recess in its front face terminating in the delivery end, for applying the binding strips snugly into the corners of reentrant angles in the work. The invention is illustrated as applied to a machine with needle, presser-foot and lower-dog feeds. The strip folder 22 is carried on an arm 21 adjustably bolted to the plate 16. The plate 16 occupies a recess 17 in the cloth plate 1 and is carried by a swing-out plate 13 pivoted at 12 on the cloth plate. The folder is made of sheet metal and comprises an inner folding rib 23, which doubles the binding strip longitudinally, with a reversely bent flange 24, for turning the upper edge of the binding B, Fig. 6, and a flange 25 for guiding the lower edge. If designed for heavy work, the lower flange 25 may be supported by an arm 26 also screwed to the plate 16. The strip enters the receiving end 28, is reversed by the rib 23, and emerges at the delivery end at lips 29, 30, these being cut away obliquely at 31, 32. The raised part 33 of the swing-out plate 13 is cut away to permit the edge 32 to be level with the cloth plate. To permit satisfactory binding of reentrant angles, the rib 23 is provided with a recess 34 into which projects a flat spring 35. A stop-member 37 limits its upward movement. The spring is free to yield to the passage of the work to an extent limited by the stop member, bridging the upper and lower members of the rib 23 at the rear of the binder. The edge of the member 37 constitutes an edge-guide for the binding-strip B and body material M in straight runs, and as the end of the spring tongue extends beyond the edge 37, the work may be swung about it when turning a corner of the work as shown in Fig. 6.
