VIGNEOF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE GREIST MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, A CDBIOBA'IION OF CONNECTICUT SEWING MACHINE BINDER Application filed April 14,
This invention relates to a binding attach- 111611 6101 sewing machines and has for its object to provide a binder of simple conalso be utilized as a binding and piping attachment, the invention comprising a smoothing finger for pressing down the fold of the binding as it emerges from the folding binder scroll.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a plan view of the improved binder, Figs. 2 and 3 are opposite side views thereof; Fig. 4 is a front end view of the same, Figs. 5 and 6 are detail sections on lines 55, and 6-6, re-
- spectively, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes a presser-foot provided with a shank 13 for attachment to the presser-bar of a sewing machine. Mounted on the presser-foot is a plate 14 having a forward extension 14 which in turn has a slotted lateral extension 16 on which last-named extension a binder scroll 17 is mounted. The scroll 17 is provided with a series of slots 17 of different sizes, these slots increasing in size from that nearest to the delivery end of the binder scroll to that nearest to the entering end thereof.
The plate 14 is attached to the presserfoot 12 by a rivet 18 extending through a slot 19 in said plate 14 so that the said plate and the binder scroll and other parts carried thereby may be adjused laterally relative to the presser-foot and needle of the sewing machine, said plate 14 being frictionally held in place on the presser-foot by a curved plate spring 20 arranged beneath the head of the rivet 18 and bearing against said plate. For convenience in adjusting the plate 14 laterally said plate is provided with an upwardly projecting lug or finger piece 14*.
Pivot-ally mounted on the extension 14 of the plate 14 is a swinging arm 21 yieldingly held in place on the said extension 14 by a frictionwasher 22 arranged beneath the head of a rivet 22 by which said arm is pivoted to said extension 14". The arm 21 is provided at its end nearest to the Presser-foot, with a laterally extending finger 23 which is adjacent the mouth or delivery end of the binder scroll and which is adapted to press on the 1930. Serial No. 444,301.
fold of a binding emerging from said scroll and thus smooth it down. The said fin er 28 is provided at its inner end with. a ownturned hook 23* adapted to engage" the up per ply of a folded binding to assist in guiding the binding to the needle of the sewing machine. The arm or lever 21 is provided with an upwardly projecting lug or finger piece 21*, for convenience of adjustment, and it is also provided with a downturned lug 21 which will limit its swingingmovement toward the binder scroll by abutting against the edge of the extension 14 of the plate 14. As the binder scroll is provided with slots of different sizes to accommodate strips of diflerent widths theswinging arm or lever 21. may be adjusted laterally so that the downturned hook 23 may be adjusted laterally to accommodate such difierent widths.
The arm 21 mounted on the extension 14 of the plate 14, is provided at its forward end with an upturned member .21 having a slot 21 through which the binding and piping strips maybe passed to the slots 17 a in the back of the binder scroll.
In the operation of this binder, in-doing plain binding, the binding tape or strip may enter thefront end of the binding'scroll if said tape or strip be a relatively wide one, or the binding tape or strip may be passed through the guiding slot 21 in the upwardly projecting lug 21 and then through one of the slots, 17 in the-back of the binder scroll. If both binding and piping is to be performed by the use of the attachment a relatively narrow binding may be passed to one of the smaller slots in the back of the binder scroll and a relatively wide piping strip may be assed through alarger one of said slots and will be folded into the binding strip so that in the completed work the piping strip will extend beyond the binding, for forming piping. In the construction shown two or more piping strips of different widths-may be passed through the binder scroll and be folded into the binding strip in such a manner that single, double or triple pipings maybe performed, in making ornamental edgings on the work. Thus" in using one or more piping strips in connection with a binding from the binder scroll,
