Abstract

327,112. Robinson, J. Sept. 26, 1928. Directive signalling.-In a direction-finding svstem in order to minimize the effect of interference in blurring the critical indication, the required bearing is transmitted as a visual effect in the form of a scale of degrees, with or without the name of the transmitting station and an indicating pointer, by still-picture or television apparatus of known type, and a directional effect is superposed either by using. a rotating frame or other directional aerial, at the transmitting or receiving end, whereby the required bearing is visibly indicated by the suppression of a definitely orientated part of the received picture. As shown in Fig. 1, still-picture transmission apparatus 10, 12 is used to send a facsimile of a scale of degrees 11. At the receiving end, owing to the effect of the rotating-loop transmitting aerial 14, the scale 18 is shown with blank portions corresponding to the bearing of the aerial 16 relatively to the transmitter. In Fig. 2 television apparatus 26, 27, 28, of known type, is used to transmit the image of a pointer 25 rotating at a constant speed. An aerial 31 -also transmits a non-directional orientating signal at definite intervals, i.e. when contacts 33 are short-circuited by brushes 34 on the rotating pointer. At the receiving station 36, a moving image of the pointer 25 is shown on the screen 40, which may be graduated as a compass card, but the image vanishes along a definite diameter corresponding to the required bearing. Alternatively non-directional aerials may be used to give a continuous moving picture, the orientation of the pointer at the moment when the signal from the aerial 31 is received then indicating the bearing. Or the picture of the pointer may appear on the screen only along that diameter which corresponds to the true bearing. The effect of interfering signals will mar the general symmetry of the picture and is therefore readily distinguishable from the desired " bearing " indication.
