Abstract

647,663. Radio navigation. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. March 4, 1948, No. 6819. [Class 40 (vii)] A navigation aiding radio system comprises a phase comparison omnidirectional radio beacon and a receiver on the ground, means for transferring a predetermined signal derived by the receiver to the carrier of the beacon transmission and, on a mobile craft, a transmitter for transmitting the predetermined signal to the beacon receiver, a receiver for co-operating with the beacon, and means for effecting phase comparison measurements either between the beacon signals or between the predetermined signal as transmitted from, and as received back at, the craft. The system is thus a combination of a radio beacon and an aircraft radar distance measuring system with a cooperating responder on the ground. The aircraft equipment may include a transmitter AT modulated by a 935 c/s. oscillator AO and signals therefrom be received at the beacon by receiver GR. Switch SW enables the 935 c/s. received modulation to be used to modulate the beacon transmitter or, alternatively speech communication to be applied from communication unit TC. Transmitter GT feeds an aerial system comprising horizontal fixed loop L and horizontal rotating dipole D mounted inside a vertical guide W having a ring of slots S. The radiation from loop L includes a 30 c/s. reference modulation signal on a sub-carrier and the dipole rotates at 1800 r.p.m. and its carrier is modulated with a 30 c/s. signal. The craft receiver AR includes means for detecting and separating the 30 c/s. reference modulation, the 30 c/s. signal whose phase is dependent on azimuth, and the returned 935 c/s. signal. The two former may be applied to a phase comparison circuit and indicator PI or the phase relationship between the 935 c/s. received signal and the output from oscillator AO determined. The same indicator is preferably used for both purposes. Fig. 4 (not shown), indicates suitable switching arrangements for determining one or the other phase relationship as desired on the same indicator.
