Abstract

876,813. Radio navigation. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO. Ltd. Nov. 17, 1959 [Nov. 18, 1958], No. 37138/58. Class 40(7) In a radio direction-finding receiver, signals, the frequency of which is indicative of the bearing of the receiver from a transmitter, are received on an omni-directional aerial 10 and are passed to two channels, the first including a filter 13 sharply tuned to the carrier frequency, and the second including a wide-band filter 11 which passes the carrier and the side-band frequencies. The channels feed to an amplitude modulation detector 12 whose output is passed to a frequency detector 15 which is coupled to an indicator 16 to indicate the frequency and hence the bearing. Also according to the invention, a radio beacon system includes a receiver as described above and a radio beacon which emits a beam comprising a carrier modulated by a sub-carrier, the subcarrier being frequency modulated in accordance with the azimuthal direction of the beam so that differing directions of azimuth are characterized by differing values of the frequency of the subcarrier. The beacon comprises an aerial 1 rotated in azimuth by a motor 2 which is also coupled to a variable frequency source 8. The instantaneous frequency of this source is characteristic of the instantaneous direction of the aerial 1. Source 6 generates the sub-carrier which is frequency modulated in unit 7, the resultant output modulating the carrier from source 4 in amplitude modulator 5.
