Abstract

327,056. Oertz, M. March 1, 1929, [Convention date]. Rudders.-Hollow rudders are constructed with independent stiffening means adapted to receive the pintle bolts and to carry the plating and the stiffening means also carry the pintles in a removable manner or in detachable segments so that the rudder may be mounted and dismounted as a whole. The rudder a is formed with upper and lower castings b and intermediate stiffeners to take the external plating. In the stiffeners bare bearings for the pintle bolts f which are secured in the stern frame by cotters k or like means and upon removal of which the pintles may be removed without disturbing the rudder plating. In an alternative construction the pintles are mounted in bearings in the stern frame and the cotter connection is made with the rudder frame. In a modificaion the stiffening frame is provided with half bearings and side closure castings p, Fig. 16, which normally line up with the rest of the casting and are secured thereto by bolts q. The construction is not limited to balanced rudders and the top pintles may be in accordance with one of the constructions described above and the lower pintle in accordance with one of the other constructions.
