COMBINED STERN FRAME AND SHIP's RUDDER SSEMBLY Filed May-27, 1941 2 sheets-sheet 2 ATTORNEYS Patented July 21, 1942 QFFHQE COMBINED STERN FRAME AND SHIPS RUDDER ASSEMBLY .lohn Manson Ramsay, Prestwick, Scotland Application May 27, In Great Britai 1 Claim.
This invention relates to an improved combined ships stern frame and rudder assembly of the type including a stern frame affording a gap for a propeller and equipped with a backpost carrying a rudder and detachably coupled at its upper and lower ends with the stern frame.
The invention has for an object to provide an improved combined ships stern frame and rudder assembly of the type in question wherein the detachable coupling connecting the upper end of the backpost with the stern frame and a coupling member connecting the rudder with a rudderoperating stock are located for the most part within the usual rudder trunk provided in the ships stern structure.
A combined stern frame and ships rudder assembly according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a part starboard side elevation part vertical section of the assembly, Figs. 2-6 fragmentary horizontal sections on the lines 2 2, 3 3, 4 4, 5 5 and 6 3, respectively, of Fig. 1, Fig. 7 a fragmentary elevation looking forward on the upper end portion of the stern frame, and Fig. 8 a fragmentary elevation looking aft on the upper end portion of the backpost.
As shown, I denotes the stern frame of a ship of which the counter indicater at `2 is provided with a rudder trunk 3. 4 denotes the propeller accommodated within the gap afforded by the stern frame I.
5 denotes a backpost detachably mounted on the frame I, between the upper and lower limbs thereof, and carrying a balanced streamlined hollow rudder 6. The upper end portion of the backpost 5 projects upwardly within the trunk 3 and is provided with an integral vertical coupling flange 'l detachably secured by bolts 8 to a registering vertical coupling flange 9 of a bracket I0 integral with the frame I and extending upwardly within the trunk 3. The plane abutting faces of the llanges 7, 9 are disposed in a vertical athwart plane of the ship. The lower end of the backpost 5 is provided with an integral horizontal llange II which is detachably secured by bolts I2 to a horizontal seat I3 presented by the lower limb of the frame I. The rudder 6 is coupled to a rudder-operating stock I4 by means of a hollow coupling-member I5 in the 1941, Serial No. 395,351 n December 4, 1939 form of a sleeve of which the lower end portion I5a surrounds the upper end portion of the backpost 5 and terminates at its lower end in a ilange I6 which is attached to the upper end of the rudder 6 by bolts I1, E8 which are distributed aft and forwardly, respectively, with respect to the aXis of the rudder, so as to distribute the operating stresses. The flange I6 may also be welded to the upper end of the rudder. The flanged upper end 1 of the backpost 5 protrudes into the trunk 3 through a cut-away or opening I9 in the forward wall of the upper portion of the coupling-member I5. The coupling 1, 9 is accessible through manholes 20 provided in the bracket I 0 and tted with watertight removable covers 2| (Figs. 4 and 7). The coupling-member I5 is provided at its upper end with a ilange 22 connected by means of bolts 23 with a flange 24 on the lower end of the stock I4.
Rustless steel or other non-corrosive metal may be used for any of the joints in order to prevent corrosion, and rustless steel roller or other bearings may be introduced where required in order to minimise friction.
I claim:
A combined ships stern frame and rudder assembly comprising, in combination, a stern frame affording a propeller-receiving gap and having a horizontal lower portion and a ilanged upright upper portion, said upright upper portion provided with a manhole, a backpost having a horizontal flanged lower end portion detachably coupled to said horizontal lower portion of said stern frame and having also a vertically flanged upper end portion detachably coupled to said flanged upright upper portion of said stern frame, a rudder mounted on said backpost, a rudderoperating stock disposed above and aligned with said backpost, and a coupling member connecting said rudder-operating stock with said rudder and having a lower portion which surrounds part of said backpost and which has a llanged connection with said rudder, and a rudder trunk accessible through said manhole and accommodating said llanged upright-upper portion of the stern frame, said vertically flanged upper end portion of said backpost, and the greater part of said coupling member.
JOHN MANSON RAMSAY.
