326,961. Berrisford, W. H. Feb. 19, 1929. Separating on interrupted shoots.- In the separation of coal from dirt, stone, slate or other foreign substances the material is passed through a series of stages each comprising a shoot, provided with a gap, the apparatus being so adjusted that the material abstracted and discharged in at least one stage is substantially clean coal and that abstracted in at least one other stage is substantially coal-free dirt, the middlings from the last stage being returned to the first stage for retreatment. An arrangement of plant for carrying out the separation is shown comprising two gapped shoots D, F. which separate out clean coal and deliver it by shoots L, M to a conveyer G ; a gapped shoot F which discharges coal-free dirt at H and middlings at I; jiggers C feeding the material to each separating shoot; a hopper A from which the materials to be separated are carried by a conveyer B to the first separator and a conveyer J returning the, middlings from the shoot I to the hopper A.
