Abstract
326,306. Gramophone Co., Ltd., and Morgan, R. B. Feb. 12, 1929. Vibrations, recording.-The light from an electric discharge tube used in recording mechanical or electrical oscillations is controlled or influenced magnetically. In the discharge tube described, a filamentary cathode 2 and a surrounding anode 3 ate enclosed in a glass or quartz envelope 1 containing mercury vapour, and a magnetic coil is arranged outside the envelope and coaxial with the filament. The magnet may be used only to concentrate the beam of light while it is modulated by fluctuating electrodepotentials, or, as shown in Fig. 3, the discharge may be maintained by a steady potential derived from a battery connected through a choke 5, the coil 4 then receiving the input oscillations and so modulating the discharge. The variations in the magnetic field may be produced by a mechanical vibrator. A loud-speaker 6 or other monitoring device may be applied across the discharge tube.
