Spindle apparatus. - A yarn is made of lengths of hair by joining the lengths with a guide thread of cotton or other material, the two forming a core around which are wound one or more sets of silk, wool, cotton or other threads of the same or different colours applied in opposite directions of winding. Hairs are lifted from a box 64 by a picker 116, Fig. 4, and fed between rollers 47, 48, where it is joined by a core thread A and passed through a hole 30 in a bell-mouthed projection 29. At this point a thread D is wound around the core thread A and hair. The yarn then passes into the hollow spindle 16 and at the face of a disc 40 on the end thereof a thread C is applied, the direction of winding being opposite to that of the thread D. The yarn so obtained passes out of the machine through rollers 53, 56, and is wound on a bobbin 157. The hair box 64 receives a longitudinal reciprocating motion and the picker comprises a part 115, Fig. 8, fixed to a rotary shaft and a part 116 hinged at. 117. A pin 122 is fixed to the part 116 and by engagement with a stationary cam 121 opens the picker against the action of a spring 125 on an adjusting screw 124. The winding of the threads C, D is effected by bevel gears 17, 18 of which 17 is fixed on the spindle 16 and 18 is loosely mounted and rotates in the opposite direction. This gear 18 has a sleeve 19 carrying a disc 25 to which a disc 26 is secured bv bars or rods 27. The discs 26 and 40 are detachable, to allow, for positioning of the bobbins 43, 44, the box 10 being tiltable about a pivot 9 for the same purpose. Stopping mechanism for the machine comprises a sliding bar 137 operated by a lever 146 and carrying means for lifting the rollers 48, 56, and the bobbin 157, and for applying brakes to the disc 25 and to the picker punsy. As shown in Fig. 13, the hollow spindle is in two parts rotated in opposite directions by means of the gears 18, 19 so that the threads C, C<1> are applied in one direction and the threads D, D' in the opposite direction.
