Movable-abutment type; noise, reducing; discharge and suction pipes and passages for pumps, blowers, and exhausters.-An engine or blower of the Roots-blower type with the casing divided by one or more partitions 5 into a number of compartments in which the rotor elements are staggered in such way that the effects of pressure pulsations arising from the working action are counteracted, has the supply and discharge branches 6, 7 directly opening into the casing through the end covers. The supply and discharge branches 6 - - 9 open into extended ports 14 - - 17 formed in both covers and the edges 25 of the suction ports are so situated that fluid trapped between the rotor lobes is expanded to the suction pressure before opening to the suction; the port openings are so tapered that the rotor pockets are gradually connected with or cut off from the discharge and suction ports. The partitions 5 are provided with similar port openings.
