Shaft kilns.-The kiln described in the parent Specification is made of rectangular cross-section, and encloses a number of flat rectangular retorts, which are heated solely from the limestone or other material under treatment in the body of the kiln. The boiler, which supplies steam to the retorts, is heated by the waste gases from the kiln, by air heated in flues in the kiln walls, and by air passed through the rotary discharge drums at the base of the kiln.
