Bags, folding down mouths of after filling.- The mouths of bags, of square or rectangular crosssection, are folded and closed in accordance with the method described in Specifition 281,174, [Class 94 (ii), Paper bags &c.]. The bags 10 are traversed through the machine by conveyer plates 14, Fig. 2, on an endless chain, and are first brought beneath a pair of plates 15 adapted to be lowered into the open mouth of the bag and to be separated in the same plane so that, in conjunction with folding blades 32, Fig. 3, the mouth of the bag is folded into an upstanding double wall 38, Fig. 7, with triangular tab portions 37, 137, lying in a horizontal plane. The fingers 15 and blades 32 now retire and a movement of the conveyer chain brings the bag beneath a creasing member 39, Fig. 2, which doubles over the upstanding wall 38 upon a smoothing plate 40. After the creasing member 39 has retired, a resiliently mounted pressure plate 44 presses the fold. The further movement of the conveyer passes the bag beneath guides which engage the fold and turn it over through 180‹, a plunger 62, Fig. 5, descends and presses the upper surface of the bag slightly below the upper edges of the guide plates on the conveyer, and also swings the tab portions 37, 137 upwards through 90‹ into a vertical position. The plunger returns and folders 64, 66 turn down the tabs, after which the bag is passed beneath a smoothing plate 69. The lower face of the plunger 62 may be recessed.
