Abstract
324,160. Willans, K. W., Nov. 19, 1928. Braking by throttling ex h a u s t. - Comprises means for braking locomotives and steam engines by simultaneously throttling the exhaust, and admitting air to the steam pipe. A spring may be arranged to return the exhaust, throttle valve to its normal position. In the construction shown a valve F is placed in the exhaust pipe E from the engine A and is provided with a rod p bearing against a collar m<3> on a valve M adapted to admit air to the steam pipe D. In the position shown the valve F gives a free passage for the exhaust to the blast nozzle G, but when moved to the left it throttles the exhaust and opens the valve, M so as to admit air to the steam pipe D and the engine. The spring m<2>, and a combined tension and compression spring F<1> return the valve F to its normal position. When the valve F is moved to the right the exhaust is first throttled, and then further movement of the valve allows the exhaust to escape by an outlet P, the blast nozzle G being closed by any desired means.
