Abstract
323,882. Prescott, C. W., and Metropolitan Vickers-GRS., Ltd. Dec. 3, 1928. Lenses.-In a railway signal or like lamp fitted with one or more Fresnel type lenses 3, one of which has a central bulls' eye portion 3<1> surrounded by concentric steps 5 for projecting a main beam of light 1 - - 15 substantially parallel to the axis A-A of the lens, and a portion of the concentric steps modified so as to produce an auxiliary divergent beam visible from a position closely adjacent the signal, a lens is provided with a relatively narrow stepped band 4 extending radially and comprising a plurality of parallel horizontal steps 6 disposed perpendicularly to a radius of the lens, and arranged to project in the same direction beams 16 - - 23 which diverge equally in a radial plane through the lens axis, the extreme outer portions. 19, 21, 23 of the divergent beams being substantially inclined to the lens axis, preferably at an angle of 45‹. The inner faces of the steps 6 are preferably concave in vertical planes perpendicular to the axis of the lens, and convex inwardly in horizontal planes parallel to the axis of the lens so as to make the auxiliary beam only slightly divergent, parallel, or even convergent, horizontally.
