Abstract

Moulding resin; hollowware.-Seamless articles such as bowls, pots, cups boxes, cases &c. having securing projections or recesses, are made from moulding material which is resilient for a short time after moulding, by the use of undivided dies or moulds' from which the articles are separated during the resilient period, the projecting recesses being so dimensioned as to permit such removal. Fig. 4 shows dies for the manufacture of a container furnished with internal projections a in the form of an interrupted thread adapted to be engaged by similar projections on a lid. The dies comprise a mould member c, base e and solid die D recessed to form the projections a. With a synthetic resin moulding powder such as that comprising urea, thio-urea and formaldehyde and a filler of cellulose and known under the Registered Trade Mark " Beetle," for an article 2.375 inches in diameter, the projection a is 0.015 inches. Such powder is subjected to a moulding temperature of 145 to 155‹ C. for 2¢ to 5 minutes under a total pressure of 20 to 25 tons. After moulding, the die D is raised and the article removed therefrom within about 30 seconds. Should the container stick to the mould, it is removed by raising the base c. The lid is formed in a similar manner. The projection may be a continuous ridge and the material may be sufficiently resilient to use such ridge as a " snap " fastening for a lid &c. Parts may be permanently secured together by forming a continuous ridge and corresponding recess on the respective parts and engaging such parts during the resilient period.
