Cam mechanism. - In having the cam 9 offset to one side of the axis of the tappet 2, the flanged head 3 of the tappet is fitted with a plug 5 of hardened cast iron, cast steel, tool steel, or high-speed steel, in order to prevent the centre of the head from becoming recessed under the action of the cam. The tappet itself is made of case-hardened mild steel. A hole 6 allows passage of lubricant.
