Steering, balancing, and regulating altitude.- Operating means for a control member, such as a rudder, of an aircraft. or ship comprise a primary member directly actuated by the pilot, which is pivotally mounted independently of the control member, i.e., is not mounted directly on the control member or on means fixed thereto, and is connected therewith so that its movement in one direction will cause, servo-fashion, the control member, i.e., is not mounted directly on In one form, main rudders 2 pivoted about vertical axes 6 have the leading edges of their balanced portions connected by cables or links 3 to horizontal arms 4 attached to a vertical spindle 5. A yoke 10 freely mounted on the spindle 5 is connected by cables or links 9, 11 with a similar fixed yoke on the primary member 7, and with the pilot's rudder bar respectively. The primary member 7 is pivoted between the arms 4 and is of smaller dimensions than the members 2. The yoke 10 may have its ends connected to the main rudders 2 for direct operation by connections 12 in which a certain amount of lost motion may be allowed.
