Abstract
167,318. Duncanson, F. May 15, 1920. Planes, construction and arrangement of; steering, balancing, and regulating altitude.-One or both of the leading or trailing position of a wing are pivoted about axes transverse of the line of flight and can be closed on to the fixed main structure of the wing to convert a heavily staggered multiplane into a monoplane, the leading portion being pivoted at its leading edge, and the trailing portion being pivoted about an axis forward of its leading edge and forward of the trailing edge of the part immediately in front. There may be two or more of such adjustable leading or trailing portions disposed one behind the other. Fig. 10 shows an arrangement in which there are two leading portions 2 pivoted about axes 3 and two trailing portions 5 carried on brackets 6 pivoted at 7. The portions 2, 5 can be turned into the positions shown in dotted lines, to form a continuous wing with the fixed part 1, by turning T-shaped levers 11 about their fulcra 10 by means of wires 15, 16 leading to the aviator and acting through other T- shaped levers 14. The stresses in the connecting links 17 are opposite and as nearly-balanced as possible to minimize stresses in the control wires 15, 16. When the portions 2, 5 are closed together and upon the fixed part 1, the gaps in the undersurface of the wing may be closed automatically by pivoted plates. The chord of the portions 2 and the portions 5 may exceed onethird of the chord of the fixed part 1, and in some cases may be greater than the chord of the part 1. The invention may be applied to stabilizing planes such as the horizontal fin and elevator of an airship.
