Abstract
1,230,381. Interchangeable lift surfaces on aircraft. D. LOCKSPEISER. 29 Oct., 1968 [1 Aug., 1967], No. 35243/67. Headings B7G and B7W. An aircraft has a fuselage 1 and lifting surfaces comprising a main plane 2 and a fore or tail stabilizing plane 3, the stabilizing plane 3 and at least the outer portions 10 of the main plane being interchangeable units of the same length, chord and section. As shown, the aircraft has a substantially rectangular fuselage 1 with a power plant 5 driving a shrouded pusher propeller 6 and a belly-mounted detachable cargo pack 7 with an extendable scoop. The main plane 2 is made of two identical units 10 mounted by means of braces 14; and the stabilizing plane 3, mounted symmetrically across the fuselage at the front, of a third unit. Ailerons 15, main plane flaps 16 and fore plane flaps 12 may be made interchangeable, and the distance between the point for attaching a flap 9 and the point for attaching a brace 14 may be equal to the width of the fuselage so that these units 10 are equally capable of being attached across the fuselage. Instead of having two units 10 attached together to form the main lifting plane, three units may be used with the centre unit mounted across the fuselage, or four units for the main plane and two for the stabilizer. In another arrangement twin engines driving tractor propellers are mounted on the main plane in which case only the outside wing units are interchangeable with the stabilizer plane unit or units. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown) two engines (5a) are mounted one on each side of the fuselage each pivotable about pivots (22) between positions in which the propeller (6a) exerts thrust (a) horizontally or (b) at an angle to provide a component of lift. The engines may be pivoted during flight in associated with either elevators or flaps.
