Abstract
323,240. Marks, E. C. R., (Du Pont de Nemours Co., E. I.). June 22, 1928. Alcohols other than methanol are synthesized from carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a methanol catalyst to which an alkali metal compound has been added, the process being operated at a space velocity of the reacting gases which is more than five times the space velocity at which a methanol synthesis employing only the methanol catalyst would reach equilibrium under the same temperature and pressure conditions. The space-time yields for space velocities above the said five-fold space velocity are stated to be greater than would be expected from a consideration of the yields at lower space velocities. According to the examples, (1) a space velocity of at least 40,000 litres of gas per litre of catalyst per hour is used when a gas mixture containing 35 per cent carbon monoxide and 50 per cent hydrogen is passed over a catalyst prepared by the gentle ignition of basic zinc ammonium chromate and mixing potassium chromate therewith, a temperature of 450‹ C. and a pressure of 280 atmospheres being employed; (2) under the same temperature conditions andusing the same gas proportions as before, but under a pressure of 1000 atmospheres and using a zinc chromite catalyst containing potassium sulphate, a space velocity of at least 100,000 litres of gas per litre of catalyst per hour is employed; (3) when passing water gas at a temperature of 475‹ C. and under a pressure of 225 atmospheres over a catalyst prepared by reducing a mixture in equivalent proportions of zinc oxide and potassium chromate, a space velocity of at least 40,000 litres of gas per litre of catalyst per hour is employed.
